A new round of the Women’s Handball Champions League is held at the end of this week. Among the Romanian teams, the first to play is Gloria Bistriţa. On Saturday, the Transylvanian team will play in Hungary, in Debrecen, as part of Group A. In the first round of the League, last Saturday, Gloria beat the Norwegian team Storhamar on home soil, 29 – 26. The Hungarian team also comes after a victory: 25 to 24 against the Montenegrin team Buducnost Podgorica.

CSM Bucharest will also face a Hungarian team on Sunday, in Group B, namely Ferencváros Budapest. In the last round, the Romanian champion lost, away, by just one goal, score 27 to 28, in Denmark, at Ikast. Ferencváros also comes after a defeat, suffered at home, at Erd, near the Hungarian capital – 32 to 34 with the Danish team Odense.

The Romanian Super League championship resumes this weekend, with the ninth round. On Friday,  Universitatea Cluj is up against Rapid Bucharest. Saturday begins with the game in Arad, between UTA and FC Argeş, two teams located in the first half of the ranking. The team from Pitesti is in 4th place, and the team from Arad, in 7th place. The match between the Bucharest team Metaloglobus is held in Clinceni, promoted this year to the Super League, now ranked in last place, and last year’s vice-champion, CFR Cluj. The Bucharest team has only one point after the first 8 rounds, but the Cluj team is not doing great either, having only one victory in the current edition of the championship.

Three games are scheduled for Sunday. Oţelul Galaţi hosts FC Botoşani in a Moldavian derby. Next up, in Craiova, is the confrontation between the local team, Universitatea, and Farul Constanţa. Craiova are favorites, but Farul has often offered a surprise. The third game of the day will take place in Miercurea Ciuc, between Csikszereda and FCSB. Csikszereda has no wins so far. FCSB, the defending champion, is not doing great either, having only one success, obtained in July, in the second round, in Ploieşti.

Monday opens with the game in Sibiu, between Hermannstadt and Unirea Slobozia. Both teams are coming off defeats in the previous round. The day ends with a traditional derby. In Ploieşti, Petrolul meets Dinamo Bucharest, in a confrontation with a history of over 70 years. The first match between the two teams was played on November 6, 1948, when Petrolul was still active in Bucharest. The “Gasmen” won 3-1, all their goals being scored by the man who later gave the name to the current Ploieşti stadium – Ilie Oană. (EE)
