Both the Romanian sides which played on Thursday in the European football cups conceded defeat to their opponents. In Europa League, FCSB lost at home 2-0 to the Swiss side Young Boys Bern. Both goals were scored by Joël Monteiro in the first half of the match. Surprisingly, the team’s technical staff didn’t send to the pitch the best lineup and that became visible in the hosts’ timid counterattacks and faulty defence.
The best lineup went to the pitch in the second half in an attempt to balance the show, but it proved to be too little, too late. FCSB remains with the three points they won in the League’s first leg and will next be taking on Italian side Bologna in Bucharest, on October 23.
Universitatea Craiova started off on the wrong foot in the Conference League with a 2-0 defeat conceded to the Polish side, Rakow. Tomasz Pienko scored on the 47th minute and Oskar Repka added a second 10 minutes from time.
In the 52nd minute the Romanians were left with only 10 players on the pitch after Vladimir Screciu had been given an early bath for a challenge. The Polish side proved its superiority all throughout the game against a Romanian side, which posed no threats. Universitatea will next be playing Armenian side Noah at home in three weeks’ time.
The two sides that represented Romania in the European Cups on Thursday will meet on Sunday in the 12th leg of the Romanian Superleague. The game will be taking place on the National Arena in Bucharest. Craiova leads on the table with seven wins, three draws and a defeat, whereas FCSB is presently ranking 11th, 14 points less that Universitatea. FCSB had five defeats, four draws and only two wins out of 11 matches.
The leg kicks off on Friday with a match pitching Unirea Slobozia against Dinamo Bucharest. On Saturday, on their home turf, Csikszereda plays Universitatea Cluj, while FC Argeş plays at home Petrolul Ploieşti. Rapid Bucharest will be playing a home match against Farul Constanţa. A derby on Sunday will be opposing CFR to Hermannstadt in Cluj, western Romania. The leg’s last two matches on Monday will be pitching Oţelul Galaţi against Metaloglobus and FC Botoşani against UTA.
