This weekend will see a historical derby pitting Bucharest rivals FCSB and Dinamo.

In basketball, U-BT Cluj-Napoca’s men’s team defeated Greek side Aris Thessaloniki away on Thursday, 98–88, in EuroCup Group A. According to Agerpres, the Greeks controlled the first half, but Cluj turned the game around with a stronger finish. Australian Mitchell Creek was the standout player for the Transylvanian team, scoring 27 points, with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. In the group standings, U-BT sits in 4th place, with five wins and four losses. In Round 10, next Wednesday, Cluj will play away against Turkish side Bahçeşehir College Istanbul.
Water polo brought less encouraging news. In LEN Euro Cup Group D, Steaua Bucharest lost away to German team Spandau Berlin, 13–10. Romania’s vice-champions suffered their fifth defeat in as many matches. In Group B, Dinamo was beaten at home by Barcelona, 19–10. With no points in the first five rounds, neither Romanian team will advance further in the competition.
In football, Tuesday through Thursday saw matches in the Romanian Cup group stage, second round. Several Super League leaders suffered defeats. On Tuesday, Rapid lost 2–1 away to FC Argeș in Group A. On Wednesday, FC Botoșani was beaten at home 3–1 by Hermannstadt in Group D. On Thursday, Universitatea Craiova won 4–0 away against Petrolul in Group B, where on Wednesday UTA had defeated FCSB 3–0 at home.
This weekend brings fixtures in the Romanian Super League, Round 19 of the regular season. Friday features a single game: Oțelul Galați vs. Unirea Slobozia. Saturday opens with Csikszereda vs. FC Argeș in Miercurea Ciuc, followed by the historic Bucharest derby between FCSB and Dinamo. Sunday offers three matches: Universitatea Cluj vs. Hermannstadt, Metaloglobus vs. Farul Constanța, and Universitatea Craiova vs. CFR Cluj. Monday closes the round with UTA vs. Petrolul and FC Botoșani vs. Rapid. Rapid leads the standings with 38 points, followed by FC Botoșani with 36. (VP)
