The 2025 – 2026 season of the Romanian football Super League is drawing to a close.

The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea qualified on Thursday for the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. In the second round of the competition, she defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-0. In the next round, the Romanian athlete will face world leader Arina Sabalenka (Belarus) on Saturday. The two players have met three times before. The first time, in 2023, in Miami, Sorana won 6-4, 6-4. That same year, in Madrid, Sabalenka defeated her 6-4, 6-3. And early this year, in Brisbane, Sabalenka won again, 6-3, 6-3.
In men’s handball, Dinamo Bucharest finished the competitive season with an away win against Politehnica Timișoara, 36-35. The Bucharest team won Romania’s top division championship by a wide margin, in a season in which it also won the Romanian Cup and played in the Champions League. Since 2015, Dinamo has not lost any edition of the Romanian championship.
This weekend, matches are scheduled counting for the Romanian football Super League, the 8th round of the final phase. In the play-offs, where teams fight for the championship title and for a presence in European competitions, the first match on Friday pits CFR Cluj against Universitatea Craiova. On Saturday, Universitatea Cluj face Rapid Bucharest on home turf, and on Sunday Dinamo plays FC Argeș in Bucharest. Craiova lead the standings, with 45 points. Next are Universitatea Cluj, with 42 points, and CFR with 40 points. Dinamo is in 4th place, with 34 points, followed by Rapid, with 32 points, and FC Argeș, with 30, in 6th place.
In the play-out, where the fight is mainly to avoid relegation, this is the last but one round. On Friday, UTA Arad take on Csikszereda. On Saturday, in Galați, Oțelul face Farul Constanța. On Sunday, FC Botoșani meet Petrolul Ploiești at home. The last games will be played on Monday: Metaloglobus vs Hermannstadt and FCSB vs Unirea Slobozia. Metaloglobus is already relegated. Unirea Slobozia and Hermannstadt, tied on 21 points, are fighting to avoid the other place that leads directly to the second tier. Above them in the standings are Petrolul, with 24 points, and Farul, with 25. (AMP)
