The Universitatea Cluj football team remained undefeated in its first match of the Europa League qualifiers. In the first leg of the first qualifying round, the Transylvanian team played to a 0-0 draw in their away match against the Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv. The match took place in Lublin, Poland. The Ukrainian team dominated the match and had many scoring opportunities, but was unable to break through Cluj’s defence. Coach Cristiano Bergodi’s players also came close to scoring in the 36th minute of the first half, when Frenchman Oucasse Mendy found himself one-on-one with Ukrainian goalkeeper Ruslan Neşceret but failed to beat him. Thus, the match in Cluj-Napoca next Thursday will be decisive for qualification to the second qualifying round of the Europa League. Also in European competition, we recall that on Wednesday, Universitatea Craiova defeated the Belarusian team Vitebsk 4–1 in Hungary in the first qualifying round of the Champions League. The team from Bănie and Universitatea Cluj will face off on Sunday in Craiova for the Romanian Super Cup.
Let’s move on to rugby. The Romanian national team will play its second match in the Nations Cup on Saturday. The team, nicknamed “The Oaks”, will face Uruguay’s national team in Montevideo. Both teams are coming off losses in the first round of the competition. Romania was defeated 48–31 by Chile in Santiago, while Uruguay lost 34–41 at home to Georgia. The Romanian team is looking to avenge last year’s decisive 70–8 loss to the South American side. In the final match of the Nations League’s summer round, one week from now, “The Oaks” will play again in Montevideo, this time against Samoa.
The European Junior Swimming Championships are wrapping up this weekend in Munich, Germany. The final events will take place on Sunday. So far, the best result for the Romanian delegation has been achieved by Daria Silişteanu. She won the gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke on Wednesday with a time of 27.94 seconds, setting a new Romanian senior national record. (MI)
