The Youth (U17) and Junior (U20) World Weightlifting Championships were held in Lima, Peru, last week. 531 athletes from 67 countries were present. Romania sent 10 weightlifters to the competition, including five girls and five boys. The Romanian delegation won five medals, four silver and one bronze. Tiberiu Donose won three medals in the 73-kilogram category in the youth competition: bronze in the snatch, silver in the clean and jerk and also silver in total. Also in the junior competition, in the 45-kilogram category, Ioana Mădălina Miron won the silver medal in the snatch. In the youth competition, in the 55-kilogram category, Lucian Florin Cambei won the silver in the snatch. Following these results, Radio Romania International designated Tiberiu Donose the Athlete of the Week.
The valuable Romanian weightlifter was born on May 12, 2005, in the commune of Ijdileni, in Galaţi County (east). He will therefore turn 20 next week. He is by far the most promising young Romanian weightlifter. At the end of 2024, he was designated Athlete of the Year by the Romanian Weightlifting Federation, while the Woman Athlete of the Year was the Olympic medalist Mihaela Cambei. Tiberiu stood out in both junior and senior competitions, where he holds all Romanian records in the 73 kilogram category. In 2023, he won two gold medals at the European Junior Championships, which took place in Bucharest, in the snatch and total. In the same year, he took the podium at the Junior World Championships.
In the competition hosted in Mexico, in Guadalajara, he won the silver medal in the snatch. In the fall of 2024, he brought Romania, from the Junior World Championships held in Spain, gold in the snatch and silver in the clean and jerk and total. Then, at the European Youth and Junior Championships held in Poland, in Raszyn, he won three gold medals. In the seniors’ competition, this spring, at the European Championships hosted by the capital of the Republic of Moldova, Chişinău, he was very close to winning medals. He finished the competition in fifth place in both the snatch and the clean and jerk, and in fourth place in total. (LS)
