“Romania’s EU membership is one of the country’s most important achievements of the past 35 years. Being part of the European family is a major asset for Romania, and I am confident that this direction will be maintained”, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said during a meeting with EU ambassadors in Bucharest on Wednesday.

Talks focused on restoring balance to Romania’s public finances, energy security and strengthening cooperation in response to threats in the Black Sea region.

Ilie Bolojan outlined the measures adopted by the government to rebalance the budget and address the structural weaknesses of the economy, steps aimed at strengthening Romania’s economic foundations and boosting business confidence. The interim prime minister stressed the need to pursue reforms in what he described as a challenging international environment and highlighted the importance of energy security, as well as keeping energy prices affordable for households.

The issue is particularly significant given that the security of energy supplies and the costs borne by consumers have a direct impact on both the competitiveness of the economy and living standards. For the authorities, a key challenge remains striking a balance between the measures needed to correct fiscal imbalances and protecting citizens from the economic effects of those adjustments.

Another topic discussed was the security situation in the Black Sea, which the Romanian government says continues to deteriorate. According to a government statement, the interim prime minister underlined Romania’s readiness to work closely with Bulgaria and Türkiye to safeguard freedom and security of navigation in the region, including in the wake of the latest attacks on commercial vessels operating within the exclusive economic zones of Bulgaria and Romania.

The safety of maritime transport is an issue whose implications extend beyond the military sphere. Black Sea shipping routes are vital to regional trade, and incidents affecting navigation have the potential to increase risks for carriers, disrupt supply chains and undermine economic stability.

The meeting also addressed hybrid threats and disinformation campaigns. These represent another dimension of the challenges facing European states, requiring information-sharing, institutional coordination and close cooperation among partners.

During the meeting, Ilie Bolojan thanked the European ambassadors and the representative of the European Commission for their cooperation and continued support for Romania’s government. He also congratulated the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union on its work to date and wished it every success during the remainder of its term, at a time when the bloc continues to face multiple challenges.

In closing, the interim prime minister thanked Romania’s allies for their military presence in the country, emphasizing its contribution to strengthening NATO’s eastern flank and enhancing security across the wider Black Sea region. (VP)
