In a country like Romania, which has often intersected with excellence, including in sports, the gymnast Nadia Comăneci has become a unique symbol of perfection. And it’s not only Romanian commentators and journalists who say this, often quick to crown various figures, especially from football, whose careers cannot even be compared to Nadia’s.
The moment that changed the history of gymnastics, and of sport in general, and which had the Romanian athlete as its protagonist, took place in 1976 at the Montreal Olympic Games. There, Nadia Comăneci became the first gymnast in history to receive the perfect score of 10.00. The performance was considered impossible at the time, and the electronic scoreboard, unprepared for such a result, displayed the famous “1.00,” in a moment that entered the history of world sport.
At only 14 years old, Nadia became the youngest Olympic all around champion, a record impossible to match today after changes to international age eligibility rules. More than a singular achievement, Montreal 1976 marked the beginning of a revolution in gymnastics: Nadia Comăneci earned seven perfect 10s and proved that limits once thought insurmountable could be redefined.
Nicknamed “The Goddess of Montreal,” Nadia Comăneci is considered by many specialists to be the greatest gymnast of all time. She introduced into competition extremely difficult elements that still bear her name today, such as the famous “Comăneci salto” on the uneven bars, contributing decisively to the evolution of modern gymnastics. The year 2026 is “The Nadia Year,” established to mark five decades since the Montreal moment. “The Nadia Year” brings to Onești (east), the hometown of the great champion, elite figures of Romanian and international sport, who will take part between May 29–31 in events organized to celebrate 50 years since the first perfect 10 in gymnastics history.
Over the three days, the public will be able to attend competitions, official ceremonies, press conferences, festive moments, and shows dedicated to sporting performance. The program includes the National and International Gymnastics Competitions “Nadia Comăneci – Perfect 10,” the apparatus finals, the official awards ceremony, the launch of the Nadia Comăneci costume collection, as well as the symbolic route “The Road to Perfection.”
The events will culminate with the Champions’ Gala, organized at the local stadium, bringing together gymnastics legends and great Olympic champions from multiple sports disciplines. Meanwhile, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee announced that on June 6, Nadia Comăneci will attend this year’s edition of the National Olympic Day Run in Bucharest, where she will officially start all the races.
