Salaries in the healthcare sector have gone up starting March 1. Labour Minister Lia Olguta Vasilescu said both doctors and auxiliary medical staff will see their salaries increase up to the maximum cap stipulated in the salary scheme for 2022.

Lia Olguta Vasilescu: “For instance, the salary of a senior consultant will increase from €870 to approximately €3,260, adding to which are accumulated service benefits and bonuses. Salaries in the healthcare sector will be very high, and we were happy to note that the rate of doctors leaving the country last year went down by 40%, simply because we promised salaries would go up this year. We hope that starting this year doctors will stop leaving the country because we need them. Many healthcare units hold vacancy contests and receive no job applications.

Under the salary law, the base salary of a first-year resident doctor will be €1,200, as compared to €560, while the base salary of a senior nurse with a higher-education degree will be €930, as compared to €740 in January. Salaries will also go up for the teaching staff this month. In the pre-university system salaries will go up from €1,060 to €1,270 for junior teachers with higher-education degrees, while at university level a teacher with over 40 years of accumulated service will have a base salary of €2,380, as compared to €1,985 this January.

On the other hand, Minister Vasilescu said the Government will introduce a series of amendments to the Government emergency decree of December 2017 modifying the salary law, as to provide for salary increases for certain categories of public sector employees. Such is the case of the directors of social welfare and child protection agencies.

Lia Olguta Vasilescu: “I referred to the case of social welfare and child protection agency directors, whove had their salaries slashed by some €65. We have plans to increase their salary increment percentage so that their salaries should be restored to their previous levels. After all, we are talking about heads of institutions with dozens, if not hundreds of subordinates.

The Government emergency decree has been submitted to Parliament and will next week be debated by the Chamber of Deputies Labour Committee.
