The Romanian government adopts emergency ordinances amending criminal codes

UPDATE: Thousands of people took to the streets in Bucharest and other major cities across the country, in token of protest against the adoption by the government of emergency ordinances amending the Criminal Codes

UPDATE: Over 10,000 people protested in front of the Government offices in Victory Square in Bucharest, after the justice minister Florin Iordache announced the cabinet met on Tuesday evening and adopted emergency ordinances to amend the Criminal Codes.

They are chanting slogans like “You dont go unpunished! or “We dont leave, we dont leave!

Traffic has been brought to a halt on the main boulevards adjacent or leading to Piata Victoriei (Victory Square).

Shortly after the announcement was made by the justice minister, Florin Iordache, Romanias President Klaus Iohannis posted a message on Facebook:

“Dear Romanians,

This is a day of mourning for the rule of law. The rule of law has received a strong blow from the adversaries of justice and the opponents of the fight against corruption. The government made up of the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats has ignored the dream and hopes of millions of free Romanians, who want to live in a corruption-free country.

Today, the government made up of the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats has cancelled the work of tens of thousands of honest and brave people in the Romanian judicial system who have proved in recent years that nobody and nothing is above the law.
