In his address at the annual meeting of the heads of the diplomatic missions accredited to Bucharest, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan talked about the national domestic objectives in 2026, as painful economic measures were needed last year concurrently with sustained efforts for ensuring political stability.

Nicusor Dan:  ʺSome painful measures were needed in an extremely short period of time, and these measures at macroeconomic level have yielded unexpected results. Romania managed to end the year with a significant deficit cut and a slight economic growth. Administrative and fiscal reforms that we kicked off last year are going to consolidate the state and this joint effort – citizens, private sector, public institutions – must be capitalized upon through public policies that may kick-start economic growth. This is one of the key objectives for 2026 and 2027.ʺ

Romania is at the beginning of a national reconciliation process within society, but also of reconsolidating the power balance – Nicusor Dan went on to say adding that strengthening the rule of law and anti-corruption fight are the priorities of his mandate.

As for Romania’s foreign policy, President Dan says it has to be dynamic and creative as the year 2026 seems to be a year with a lot of challenges. In his opinion, the international environment has been marked by the reinvigoration of the logic of spheres of influence. In the meantime, the global arena has been confronted with multiple layered crises.

Nicuşor Dan:  ʺOn a global stage, which is often chaotic, Romania will continue to be a trustworthy partner. We are going to promote the same type of foreign policy based on three main pillars, namely the European Union, NATO and the Strategic Partnership with the United States. We are going to focus on issues of great importance to us, such as the aggression war the Russian Federation wages on Ukraine, the European future of the Republic of Moldova, the cooperation with our strategic partners and the states with which we share the same values. To our traditional friends in the Balkans, the Middle East, northern Africa, Latin America and Asia, we are going to propose on medium-term, a new level of ambition, which should capitalize on the historical capital of our relations and the new political and economic dynamism of these regions.”

2026 could be a year of peace in Europe, the head of the Romanian state went on to say, adding that Romania is supporting the efforts of the US President Donald Trump to negotiate a fast and lasting peace in Ukraine. Bucharest will also step up efforts for the creation of a security hub at the Black Sea and will contribute to Europe’s energy security in the future.

Nicuşor Dan has thus reiterated Romania’s commitment to remaining loyal to its pledges and promises regarding foreign and security policies, and also tenaciously pursuing its national interests.
