Last week, the World Rowing Championships took place in Shanghai, China. Romania enrolled 12 crews in the competition, competing in the men’s, women’s and mixed events. Half of these crews grabbed medals. Romanian athletes won six medals, two of which were gold and four were silver. With this result, Romania ranked 4th in the medal standings, in which the Netherlands team won. Great Britain and China ranked second and third respectively, each with three gold medals. The first Romanian medal was grabbed on Thursday, when the women’s double sculls crew, made up of Simona Radiș and Magdalena Rusu, won gold. The Romanians, the defending European champions, led the race from start to finish. Towards the end, they clearly broke away and crossed the finish line over 4.5 seconds ahead of the French boat, which was in second place. The United States crew came in third. The men’s double sculls final followed, in which Romania was represented by Florin Arteni and Florin Lehaci. The race was clearly dominated by New Zealand, and Romania came in second, in a great battle with the Swiss boat, which finished 3rd. On Friday, the women’s four-sculls crew, made up of Ancuța Bodnar, Geanina Juncănariu, Adriana Adam and Amalia Bereș, won the silver medals. The Romanians started slowly, but in the second part of the race they pushed hard. They advanced remarkably to second place and crossed the finish line just 73 hundredths of a second behind the United States boat. New Zealand came in third. The members of the men’s four-scull crew, Ștefan Berariu, Sergiu Bejan, Andrei Mândrilă and Ciprian Tudosă, also won silver medals. They were surpassed only by Great Britain, while the Netherlands won the bronze.

On Saturday, in the women’s 8+1 race, Romania, the world and Olympic champion in this event, came in second place, behind the Dutch boat, which had a difficult race to match. Great Britain came in third. The last medal of the Romanian delegation was won, on Sunday, by the mixed 8+1 crew, which won the first world title in the history of the event, freshly introduced in competitions. The Romanian boat crossed the finish line over 5 seconds earlier than the Italian crew, who won the silver medal. New Zealand came in third. For Romania, the final result was superior to that recorded at the previous competition, those in 2023, in Belgrade, when Romania won two gold medals, one silver and two bronze, and our country finished 5th in the medal standings. The result is also better than that at the Olympic Games last year, in Paris, which included two gold medals and three silver medals and placed Romania in 3rd place. The number of medals won by Romanian rowers at the World Championships in China, however, far exceeds the total medals obtained by Romania in all other sports in which World Championships were organized in 2025.
