In a message to the nation, in the context of the parliamentary elections due on September 28, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, called on the citizens to vote responsibly and choose European integration, peace and stability. She emphasized that only by voting in favor of fundamental values would the Republic of Moldova be able to remain part of the civilized world and resist the malign interference of the Kremlin, which wants to abolish it as a state and use Chișinău as a bridge in its war against the civilized world.
Maia Sandu: “Our sovereignty, independence, integrity and European future are in danger. Let us not accept the surrender of the country to foreign interests! If Russia comes to control Moldova, the consequences will be direct and dangerous for our country and for the entire region. Our land could become an infiltration ramp towards the Odessa region. These are their plans and they say them openly. The Kremlin believes that we are all for sale, that we are too small to resist, that we are not a country, but a territory, but Moldova is our home and our home is not for sale. We cannot allow peace, the safety of citizens and stability in the region to be endangered.”
The Moldovan president accused the Kremlin of trying to influence the election through “hundreds of millions of euros” invested in vote buying, disinformation campaigns and intimidation. She pointed out that these intentions are expressed “openly” by external actors, insisting that the Republic of Moldova “must not be handed over to foreign interests”. “We must keep Moldova peaceful, away from war and Russia’s attempts to attack or destabilize other states”, she continued. The Moldovan head of state launched a call for mobilization, asking voters to vote “honestly, with a clear mind”, to defend Chișinău’s European path and reject subversion attempts from outside.
On September 28, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are called to the polls to elect a new Parliament. According to France Presse agency, the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova are seen as a direct confrontation between two visions. On the one hand, the continuation of the European path, supported by Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), and on the other hand, the rapprochement with Russia, promoted by the pro-Moscow opposition parties. In this competition, 23 political parties and independent candidates registered for the 101 seats in Parliament. The election is considered crucial for the political direction of the Republic of Moldova for the coming years, but also for the security of NATO’s Eastern Flank. Against the backdrop of this crucial election, Maia Sandu sent several public messages.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Maia Sandu said that the Russian Federation has intensified its interference in electoral processes, especially targeting Moldovan voters abroad. Recently, in a speech in the European Parliament, the Moldovan president spoke about the scale of hybrid attacks coordinated by Moscow against Chișinău, warning that these methods are already being exported to other European states.
