At the end of last week, Romania’s Meteorological Agency issued a series of successive yellow, orange and red alerts, for gale force winds and precipitations mainly snowfalls, glaze frost and blizzards, a cold wave which hit most of the country.

Reports sent in by Radio Romania correspondents confirmed the weather forecasts. Many fallen trees were reported in Valcea county, southern Romania. In Lupeni, south-western Romania, roofs on two blocks of flats have been damaged by the gale force wind. Firefighters intervened in due time and no victims were reported. 8 hundred people were left without electricity in Alba county, central Romania. Fallen trees were reported in Dambovita county, southern Romania and specialized teams had to intervene in the county of Botosani, eastern Romania, to remove a tree, which fell on the roof of the local hospital.

Damaged roofs, broken electricity lines and fallen trees were also reported in the southern area of the Brasov county, central Romania. Road traffic on Transalpina motorway was interrupted and authorities had cautioned the tourists in the area on the worsening weather conditions.

A ministerial committee for emergency situations was summoned by Environment Minister, Diana Buzoianu, in the context of the forecasts on worsening weather with gale force winds, blizzard and low temperatures. Authorities and travel operators had been advised to monitor weather reports and inform the tourists on holidays in the mountainous resorts.

In an interview to Radio Romania, the director general with the National Meteorology Administration, Elena Mateescu says that we had a genuine winter episode with blizzard, gale-force wind and snow not only in the mountains with temperatures dropping down to -17 degrees in some areas. According to Elena Mateescu, this type of weather is likely to continue in the next period including on New Year’s Eve.
