Appointments. Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, has signed the decrees of appointing the new heads of the Prosecutor’s Office and their deputies, following interviews conducted by the Justice Ministry and the Superior Council of Magistracy. Cristina Chiriac will be the future Prosecutor General, Viorel Cerbu will be the head of the National Anti-corruption Directorate, and Codrin Miron will head the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT). The Romanian president says the priority of the new heads must be the fight against corruption and the big drug trafficking networks as well as tax evasion. Dan also says that he expects the new leadership to instill a new dynamic into the activity of the aforementioned institutions.

Funding. Romania will receive a response from the European Commission by the end of this month regarding Payment Requests 3 and 4 of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, said the Minister of Investments and European Projects, Dragoş Pîslaru. He says the there is no scenario taken into account by the government in which the reforms undertaken as part of the Plan are not to be finalised by August. Pîslaru pointed out that the penalties for not fulfilling the reforms are consistent, so the government will carefully monitor their implementation. The Minister explained that a mechanism has been in place for several months to assess the implementation stage of the targets and milestones, as well as risk areas, and which is available on the ministry’s website. Out of 179 targets and milestones, 45 are related to reforms, and 134 to investments. About a third of the total are fully met, a third are on the right track, while a third are faced with the risk of not being finalised, Pîslaru also said. The statements come after the Romanian government on Thursday analyzed the stage of implementation of the targets and milestones laid down in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan agreed with the European Commission.

Government. The Romanian government on Thursday approved a draft emergency order on setting up a Data Network on agricultural sustainability. The Common Agricultural Policy and the European Green Deal clearly stipulate the following objectives – reducing the loss of nutrients, as well as the use of fertilizers and pesticides; reducing the sales of antimicrobial agents, increasing bio agriculture. They also provide for increasing the characteristics of the landscape with high diversity.

Easter. Orthodox Christians, who are a majority in Romania, and Greek-Catholics, celebrated Holy Thursday, marking the Last Supper, the arrest and trial of Jesus Christ by the religious and political authority of the time. According to the gospels, on this day Jesus instated the Holy Liturgy, lowered Himself by washing the feet of his disciples, and was betrayed by Judas. We recall that Catholic and Protestant believers celebrated Easter last Sunday.

Public order. Over 24,000 employees of the interior ministry will be on stand-by every day for the duration of the Easter holiday, the ministry’s spokeswoman Monica Dajbog said on Thursday. She explained that there will be police presence on the main roads and motorways, in tourist resorts, in places where crowds are expected to gather and in other areas of operational interest. She said that public order teams, fire fighters and emergency crews will pay special attention to places of worship where religious events will take place, and where almost 2.3 million people are expected to attend. This month, fire fighters conducted training with clerical personnel on the measures that must be taken quickly before the arrival of emergency crews in the event of a medical emergency or fire, so as to ensure the safe evacuation of the people in the churches and the correct use of fire extinguishers, the ministry’s spokeswoman also said.
