Romania’s president Klaus
Iohannis is attending the EU – Turkey summit in Brussels. According to a
communiqué issued by the Presidential Administration, the summit’s focus is the
issue of migration, as Turkey plays a major role in controlling the migration
flows towards the Union. The agenda of the summit also includes topics such as
the start of negotiations on Turkey’s joining the EU, as well as the
liberalization of visa regulations for the Turkish citizens. On Monday,
president Iohannis will travel to Paris, where, alongside heads of state and
government from some 145 countries, he will attend the opening of the 21st
session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC). The main goal of the conference is to adopt a new
international agreement on climate change, which would be legally binding for
all states, as of January 1st, 2021.
Representatives of Romanian
communities abroad have gathered in Alba Iulia and Zlatna, in central Romania,
to attend the 19th Congress of Romanian Spirituality. The congress was created
by the Cultural League for the Union of Romanians Around the World, with a view
to helping these communities maintain ties with the mother land, promoting
Romanian culture and spirituality, and urging Romanian officials and NGOs to
really support these communities abroad. Delegates from over 30 countries are
attending the Congress.
A general rehearsal for the
military parade on December 1st, Romania’s National Day, was
organized in Bucharest this morning. Over 2,600 military and 360 technical
devices will participate in Tuesday’s parade. Romanian soldiers and staff of
the Interior Service and the special services will be joined at the parade by
troops from the Republic of Moldova, Romania’s neighbor with a predominantly
Romanian-speaking population. Also participating will be military staff from
Bulgaria, the US, Poland and Turkey, some of Romania’s NATO allies. December 1st
became Romania’s National Day after the anti-Communist Revolution of December
1989, marking the formation of the Romanian unitary state.
On Saturday, the famous tenor
Jose Carreras got the title of Honoris Causa of the ‘Gheorghe Dima’ Music
Academy in Cluj-Napoca, north-western Romania, in recognition for his
international artistic activity. On Thursday, Jose Carreras gave a concert in
Bucharest, accompanied by the ‘George Enescu’ Philharmonic Orchestra, and
tonight he will be performing in Cluj, alongside the ‘Transylvania’ State
Philharmonics. The two concerts are part of his good-bye tour titled A Life in
Music. In another move, Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu is tonight singing
on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, at an event aimed at
raising funds for the victims of the ‘Colectiv’ fire of October 30th, which has
killed 60 people.
On
Saturday night, in Quebec, the Romanian – Canadian boxer, Lucian Bute, was
defeated by the British James DeGale in a match counting for the IBF world
title in the super-middleweight category. Lucian Bute thus missed the opportunity
to get back the champion title won by DeGale in spring, after defeating the
American Andre Dirrell. The Romanian – Canadian pugilist held the title for
five years, before being beaten by the British Carl Froch in 2012.
