Motion. The Social Democratic Party, a former member of the pro-European government coalition in Bucharest, together with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, in the populist, ultranationalist opposition, may today file a no-confidence motion they announced on Monday against the minority government led by the Liberal Ilie Bolojan. According to political sources quoted by Radio Romania, the two parties have already collected 233 signatures, the minimum number necessary for the motion to pass. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has warned that a collapse of the government at this moment will lead to economic chaos and the risk of Romania losing billions of euros under the National Recovery and resilience Plan, as the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians have no plan for the next move and are creating expectations for Romanians that they cannot fulfil.

 

Summit. President Nicuşor Dan is attending the Three Seas Initiative Summit taking place today and tomorrow in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This platform, founded in 2015, brings together 13 states, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Romania and Poland, EU member states, located between the Adriatic, Baltic and Black Seas, and aims to contribute to the economic development of Central and Eastern Europe through infrastructure connectivity in three main areas: transport, energy and digital infrastructure. By improving north-south connectivity, the Three Seas Initiative region contributes to economic growth, energy security and regional resilience. This region represents a market of approximately 120 million inhabitants. Over 100 interconnection projects have been launched as part of the Three Seas Initiative.

 

Partnership. There is a need to enhance the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States, president Nicuşor Dan said on X on Monday, after talks in Bucharest with the State Secretary of the US Army Daniel P. Driscoll. The latter also held talks with the Romanian foreign minister Oana Ţoiu, who said the bilateral partnership remains essential for Romania’s security. Defence minister Radu Miruţă and and Daniel P. Driscoll signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the field of drones and anti-drone systems.

 

Immunity. The European Parliament has voted to lift the immunity of Romanian MEP Diana Iovanovici Şoşoacă for all alleged crimes she is being investigated for in Romania, with one exception, related to a speech given in a plenary session of the European Parliament in which she praised Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu. The request was made by the General Prosecutor’s Office in Bucharest. Diana Şoşoacă is being investigated for several crimes, including fascist propaganda, promoting the cult of persons convicted of war crimes and Holocaust denial. The European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs gave a favorable opinion last week on the request on the waiver of her immunity.

 

Protest. Over 10,000 trade union members, representatives of the Meridian National Trade Union Confederation and affiliated trade union federations, today said they would stage a protest in front of the Government headquarters in Bucharest on World Day for Safety and Health at Work. They denounce the lack of social dialogue in the adoption of recent government measures which, they say, have not produced the expected results and have seriously affected the workers’ rights, standard of living and jobs.

 

Royal visit. King Charles of Great Britain and Queen Camilla are on a four-day visit to the United States to celebrate 250 years of close Anglo-American relations since the Declaration of Independence. The King and Queen will be received at the White House, where the King will have talks with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, before addressing the US Congress. This is the first time a British monarch has addressed Congress since the 1991 speech given by Queen Elizabeth II. Radio Romania’s Washington correspondent reports that the king is expected to speak about defending the values ​​of democracy and the historical ties between the United Kingdom and the United States, which “have always found ways to come together”, he will say. The visit, however, takes place against a backdrop of unprecedented tensions between the two allies, due to the war in Iran.

 

Festival. The Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova and the Shakespeare Foundation are organising, the Shakespeare International Festival between May 21-31, bringing together performances, concerts and events that put the city of Craiova at the heart of world theatre. According to the organisers, the theme of this year’s edition is ‘WILL matters”, proposing a reflection on will as a creative force and engine of imagination. The festival brings to Craiova productions inspired by the work of William Shakespeare by companies from over 70 countries. Initiated in 1994 by Emil Boroghină, the Shakespeare International Festival Craiova is considered the most important festival dedicated to Shakespeare’s work, bringing together prominent names of the international scene and consolidating Craiova’s status as a global cultural landmark.
