PRESIDENT – Romanian President Nicușor Dan took part in a special session of the Three Seas Initiative Business Forum held in Dubrovnik, Croatia. He emphasized that the forum’s economic component offers a major opportunity to strengthen connections among the participating countries’ economies. In his view, we live in a world where scale matters: larger actors are more efficient and have greater capacity to invest in innovation. The President also announced that Romania will pursue an economic and financial partnership with the World Bank for the development of reactors 3 and 4 at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. Nicușor Dan spoke on the Leaders’ Panel of the Business Forum, alongside representatives from the financial and business sectors across the region, as well as from the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. The Three Seas Initiative is a flexible, informal political platform at presidential level, bringing together twelve EU member states situated between the Adriatic, Baltic, and Black Seas. Its goal is to promote convergence and cohesion within the European Union by reducing development disparities and enhancing regional interconnectivity in the fields of energy, transport, and digital infrastructure.

MOTION – The motion of censure initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) against the government led by Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was read on Wednesday in the Bucharest Parliament. The document was signed by 254 senators and deputies from AUR, PSD, “Pace – Întâi România”, POT, as well as several unaffiliated parliamentarians. According to the initiators, the government is preparing the largest transfer of strategic assets in the past two decades, invoking obligations under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is accused of promoting austerity measures that directly affect living standards. The signatories argue that the economy is struggling under increasingly burdensome consumption taxes and that these measures stem from the coalition’s refusal to engage in dialogue or consider alternative proposals. The National Liberal Party (PNL), led by the Prime Minister, reiterated that if the PSD chose to align itself with AUR, cooperation between the two parties would no longer be possible. Speaking from Croatia, where he attended the Three Seas Initiative summit, President Nicușor Dan stated that Romania will maintain its pro Western orientation regardless of the outcome of the censure motion and assured that he will act accordingly.

TREASURE – Romania does not give up its diplomatic efforts to recover the treasure sent to Moscow in 1916 and 1917, National Bank governor Mugur Isărescu stated. He explained that the Central Bank is proposing a new form of institutionalized dialogue, one that would reflect current international political developments and, in particular, the anticipated moment when Russia might once again align itself with states that respect international law. Isărescu added that such an approach can only be effective if it remains insulated from electoral cycles and short term political interests, and he emphasized the need for support from the entire Romanian society. In this context, the National Bank presented on Wednesday a new philatelic issue titled “The Treasure from the Vault of History – The Gold of the National Bank of Romania in Moscow.”

EU – The European Parliament has adopted its position for negotiations with the member states on the structure and key financial allocations of the 2028–2034 multiannual financial framework. MEPs are calling for a predictable, adequate, and transparent budget, with priority given to areas such as agriculture, European security, and energy independence. They also propose additional funding for research and innovation to prevent Europe from becoming dependent on technologies developed outside the EU. The overall budget is set at a level 10% higher than the European Commission’s proposal, and it includes new revenue sources, such as digital taxation on online gambling and cryptocurrency transactions.

SPEECH – King Charles addressed a joint session of the US Congress, marking only the second time a British monarch has done so. He referred to the armed attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, condemning violence and stating that such acts ‘will never succeed’, according to CNN. The British sovereign praised NATO’s role in safeguarding citizens and shared interests, and he underscored the importance of continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He described the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom as a ‘remarkable, renewed and reconciled partnership’, expressing hope that it will endure on the basis of shared values. CNN notes that the speech was a significant diplomatic moment for the monarch and was met with a warm, bipartisan reception. The network also reports that, at several points, Charles subtly—but firmly—challenged some of the positions on which President Donald Trump has recently been at odds with the United Kingdom.

DRONE – New drone attacks targeting civilian and infrastructure sites in Ukraine occurred on Wednesday morning in the town of Ismail, located near Romania’s river border in Tulcea County. Residents in the area received RO ALERT warnings. According to the Ministry of National Defense, two F 16 aircraft from the Air Police combat service took off overnight from a base in the south. Ground radars tracked two groups of drones—one consisting of seven, the other of eight—that struck the Ukrainian town of Ismail. The pilots reported multiple explosions on the Ukrainian side of the Danube, in the Ismail area. No radar signals were detected in Romanian airspace. Recently, a Russian drone caused damage to a household and a lighting pole in the city of Galați, in the southeast. (EE)
