CONDEMNATION Murders like that in Munich must be punished promptly and with maximum severity – Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said after condemning the attack like most of the world leaders. The Romanian president added that the international community must step up efforts to prevent such incidents and take action when needed. According to the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest no Romanians are among the victims of the attack. Romanias diplomatic missions have opened up hotlines and are ready to offer support if need be. Romanians in southern Germany have been advised to remain extremely cautious while traveling through crowded places. They have also been recommended to observe the local authorities recommendations and get updates on the latest developments.
RAMPAGE 9 people were killed and 20 wounded in a shooting rampage at a mall in Munich last night. The attack caused panic and blocked the city for several hours as over 200 police troops had been deployed to find the assailants, whom they presumed to be three. They eventually found an 18-year old German-Iranian who committed suicide after the rampage. According to police source the man was suffering from depression and was in no way connected to the Islamic State. The attack in Munich has been the third in Europe in the past 8 days, after that in France, which left 84 people dead and the last weeks attack in Germany, when an Afghan refugee wounded 5 people in a train.
MIGRATION In the first semester of 2016, the General Inspectorate for Immigration has assured the legal stay in Romania for 110 thousand foreign nationals. 45 thousand of these have come from the EU, from the European Economic Area and Switzerland and 65 thousand from third countries. Most of the foreign nationals have decided to get residence in Romania in order to join family, to study or work. Most of the foreign nationals have come from third countries like the Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova, Turkey and China. From the EU members are those comming from Italy, Germany and France.
REPRISALS A week on after the coup attempt in Turkey, the regime of president Recep Erdogan has continued its reprisals against the so-called conspirators. Ankara has today extended the preventive arrest term, from 4 to 30 days, while 1,000 private schools have been closed down. The Turkish Executive had earlier announced it would temporarily suspend the European Convention of Human Rights after having declared the state of emergency for three months on Thursday. Tens of thousands, including army and police troops, magistrates, teachers and public servants have been either arrested or sacked. After the aborted coup, president Erdogan has launched a campaign against the supporters of his political opponent, reclusive cleric Fehtullah Gullen who is currently living in the USA. Erdogan has accused Gullen of being behind the coup attempt in Turkey, while the latter has denied any involvement adding that Erdogan is using the coup as a pretext to strengthen his power in Turkey.
