Romania is invited to join the Nuclear Energy Agency; Romania asks for aid with measles vaccination

NUCLEAR — Romania has been invited by the OECD to become a full member of the Nuclear Energy Agency, as announced officially by the government in Bucharest. Romania filed for membership in October 2016, then undergoing an official evaluation by the Agency. Romania joining the Agency was declared a priority by the Grindeanu cabinet on Thursday.
MEASLES — Health Minister Florian Bodog called on the WHO to supply measles vaccine to Romania. He said that the authorities in Bucharest will resort to supplies assigned to other countries to cover domestic demand for the rest of the year. Minister Bodog pointed out that the measles epidemic in the country could spread to neighboring countries. We will be back with more on the crisis after the news.
MOLDOVA – A delegation of the Venice Commission, set up by the Council of Europe, is in the Republic of Moldova to study a project to amend the Constitution, introduced by Russian leaning president Igor Dodon, granting him additional powers, including the power to dissolve Parliament. Dodons Socialist Party supports the initiative, but other parties contest the move.
ROME — Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, ranked 4th in the world, plays today in Rome against Estonian player Anett Kotaveit, ranked 68th, in the quarter finals of the tournament there. In the eighth finals, Halep defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 17th seeded. Last week, Simona Halep won the Madrid tournament for the second year in a row.
AGRICULTURE — Over one billion Euro will be earmarked to developing irrigation systems in Romania, through a national program. Minister of Agriculture Petre Daea, launched a strategy in Bucharest on reacting to climate change and its effects of farming. This is supposed to bring in jobs and sustainable development, according to the minister. American and Israeli companies have presented offers as part of an event held to launch the initiative.
IRAN — Over 56 million Iranian voters are expected to go to the polls in presidential and local elections. Favorites in the run to the presidency are moderate incumbent Hassan Rohani and ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisi. Radio Romanias correspondent to Tehran told us that preliminary polls indicated that Rohani is in the lead, mainly due to his handling of the nuclear deal with the US, which removed sanctions that stifled the economy. He also seems to have support from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
