Sorana Cîrstea moves up into the second round of the Roland Garros

The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea Sunday qualified for the second round of the French Open at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. She defeated the French player Ksenia Efremova 6-3, 6-1. Cîrstea, no. 18th in the world, needed one hour and 10 minutes to prevail over an opponent ranked 625th in the world and who entered the main draw on a wild card. The Romanian athelete secured 70 WTA points. Also on Sunday, Gabriela Ruse left the competition after abandoning her match with Poland’s Magdalena Fręch. At 7-6, 2-1 for her opponent, Ruse blamed medical problems and pulled out of the game. She left with 10 WTA points for participation.

 

In the final of the Romanian National Water Polo Super League, on Sunday, a tie was restored between Steaua Bucharest and CSM Oradea. The score is 2-2, after the Bucharest team won at home 17-13. The most efficient player of the match was Steaua’s Andrei Neamțu, who scored 7 times. The final is played in the “best of five games” system, and the decisive match is due on Friday, in Oradea.

 

We move on to football. Over the weekend, games took place counting for the Super League play-offs and for the Conference League play-off semi-finals. On Saturday, in Târgoviște, Chindia tied with Farul Constanța, 3-3, in the first leg of the Super League play-offs. The return match is scheduled for Sunday, in Ovidiu. In the other play-off match, Hermannstadt beat Voluntari 3-2 in Sibiu. The second leg will take place on Monday, June 1, in Voluntari.

 

In the Conference League qualifyer semi-finals, FCSB beat FC Botoșani 4-3 after extra time at the Steaua Stadium in Bucharest. Botoșani scored first, but FCSB turned the tables, bringing the score to 3-1. The guests tied and went into extra time, where the Bucharest team scored and won. The play-off final will be pitting FCSB against Dinamo Bucharest, on Friday, at the Arch of Triumph stadium in the capital city. (AMP)
