In Romania, the domestic football season has come to an end. Across the ocean, however, Major League Soccer—the North American professional football league—has just passed its first third. The regular season is set to conclude in November, followed by the playoffs and then the final, which is scheduled for December. In the meantime, the MLS has gone on a hiatus for the World Cup hosted by North America, and is scheduled to resume on July 16.
A Romanian player, Louis Munteanu, took part in one of the most spectacular games of the competition’s latest round, where he also managed to score. His team, DC United, drew 4-4 at home against CF Montreal on Saturday, with the Romanian forward scoring the opening goal in the 9th minute. Following a free kick taken by his team and a well-placed shot that was parried forward by the Canadian goalkeeper, Munteanu capitalized on the rebound and headed the ball into the opponent’s net. For his performance in Saturday’s match, which caught the attention of both the public and experts alike, Radio Romania International has named Louis Munteanu the Athlete of the Week.
Louis Munteanu was born in Vaslui (eastern Romania) on June 16, 2002. He developed as a footballer at the Gheorghe Hagi Academy, from which he was promoted to Viitorul Constanța. He plays as a forward. He made his debut in the Romanian top tier at the age of 17, specifically on October 27, 2019, in a match against Dinamo Bucharest, which his team lost 2-3. In September 2021, he transferred to the Italian club Fiorentina, though he did not make any appearances for the first team.
In 2022, he was loaned by the Florence-based club to Farul Constanța, with whom he became a Romanian champion a year later. He then moved to CFR Cluj, after which he transferred this year to the United States to join the Washington-based team DC United, for which he has already scored 5 goals in 11 matches played. He has earned 4 caps for the Romanian national team, making his debut on October 12, 2023, in a match against Belarus. His first goal for Romania was scored on October 9, 2025, in a friendly match against Moldova, followed by a second goal scored on November 18, 2025, in a fixture against San Marino.
