ARMY DAY – President Klaus Iohannis is today attending in Bucharest the ceremonies occasioned by the Romanian Army Day. The Defence Ministry has announced that the headquarters of the military institutions and maritime and river-boats will be flying the national flag. Special ceremonies and commemorative events will be organised by all garrisons in the country, on theatres of operations abroad and in the countries where Romania has accredited military attaches. Carei, in the north-west, will be hosting special ceremonies, attended by war veterans, PM Mihai Tudose, defence minister Mihai Fifor, and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Liviu Dragnea. Carei is the last Romanian locality freed, 73 years ago, during WW II, from the occupation of Hungarian troops, allied with Nazi Germany. According to historians, the Romanian military deliberately waited for the day of October 25, 1944 to launch the final assault and thus to dedicate their victory to King Mihai, on his anniversary day.
ANNIVERSARY — King Mihai I of Romania who is turning 96 years of age today is celebrating his birthday in a private atmosphere in his Swiss residence, the website romaniaregală.ro writes. On behalf of the former sovereign, the last sovereign of Romania, princess Margareta, the Custodian of the Crown will bestow awards in Bucharest upon personalities and collaborators of the Royal House, living both in Romania and abroad. Also today, the Romanian Athenaeum will host the 10th edition of the annual charity concert organised by the Princess Margaret of Romania Foundation. We recall that King Mihai I, diagnosed with cancer, withdrew from public life in spring. Enthroned in 1940, King Mihai was forced to abdicate in 1947 by the communists who seized the power and was also forced into exile in the West. Mihai I was allowed to return to Romania only after the Anti-Communist Revolution of 1989 and regained his Romanian citizenship, that he had been stripped off by the communists, and part of his properties. The king has militated, as special ambassador in the big western chancelleries, for Romania’s accession to NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.
JERUSALEM — Romanian foreign minister, Teodor Melescanu, was received on Tuesday in Jerusalem by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. The two officials talked about bilateral relations, mainly at economic level. The Romanian foreign minister has conveyed the proposal by Romanian PM, Mihai Tudose, for the two sides to strike a partnership in the field of new technologies, laying emphasis on energy, agriculture, education and research. Minister Melescanu has also reiterated Romania’s support for boosting Israel’s relations with the European Union. The agenda of talks also included such issues as the Middle East peace process, the Iranian nuclear file and the conflict Syria.
JUSTICE — The Romanian justice minister Tudorel Toader will present a special parliamentary committee with a bill on the amendment of the justice laws. The ruling coalition last week decided to promote the bill as a parliamentary initiative rather than a government project. The bill proposed by Toader stipulates, among others, that the president is no longer to appoint the heads of the main prosecutor’s offices, the transfer of the judicial inspection body to the justice ministry and raising the age for the promotion of magistrates. Liviu Dragnea, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, the senior coalition partner, said the debates on the new bill would begin before receiving an opinion from the Venice Commission on the provision related to the appointment of chief prosecutors and that the bill would be submitted to a vote in the current Parliament session.
TENNIS — Romanian tennis player, WTA no.1, Simona Halep, is today playing against the Danish Caroline Wozniacki (no.6 WTA), in her second Red Group match of the Champions’ Tournament in Singapore. In the second match of the day, France’s Caroline Garcia (no.9 WTA) is meeting Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (no.4 WTA). On Monday, Halep defeated Garcia, and Wozniacki defeated Svitolina. On Tuesday, in a White Group match, American Venus Williams defeated Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, 7-5, 6-7), 7-5, and the Czech Karolina Pliskova (no.3 WTA) defeated Spain’s Garbine Muguruza (no.2 WTA), 6-2, 6-2.
