Drone – In the city of Galaţi, where a Russian drone crashed on an apartment building on Friday and injured two people, a commission has been formed to assess the damage. The commission members will evaluate each affected apartment to determine the extent of the damage and the amount of compensation to be awarded, the Prefect’s Office announced. During a meeting of the National Committee for Emergency Situations, the authorities approved emergency aid of 10,000 lei for each family or single person whose home was less than 25% damaged, and 25,000 lei for each case where the damage exceeded that threshold. Experts concluded that the building’s structural integrity was not compromised, and electricity supply has been restored, though not gas supply. 27 of the 40 families evacuated after the explosion have already returned to their apartments. The only family unable to return home is the one from the apartment directly damaged by the drone’s impact. Its members, a 14-year-old child and the mother, remain in the hospital. Romania, NATO, and the EU have condemned Moscow’s actions, and as a retaliatory measure, Bucharest has decided to declare the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata and to close the Consulate.
Nadia Comaneci – The former gymnastics great Nadia Comăneci was awarded the National Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Cross on Saturday. The highest distinction awarded by the Romanian state to athletes was presented to the legendary champion by President Nicuşor Dan during a ceremony held at the Cotroceni Palace. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympics, when the Romanian athlete earned the first perfect 10 in the history of world gymnastics. In her speech, Nadia Comăneci encouraged children to practice sports and dedicated the moment to future generations of champions. The city of Onești, where the former gymnast was born, is celebrating the ‘Nadia Year’ with a series of events dedicated to her achievements, bringing together champions, coaches, and sports enthusiasts.
Pentecost – Orthodox and Greek Catholic Christians in Romania celebrate today the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles of Jesus Christ, commonly known as the Pentecost. This occasion holds great significance, as it marks the founding of the Christian Church, 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believers mark this occasion by attending the Divine Liturgy, at the end of which they receive blessed walnut leaves. They symbolize the flames said to have appeared above the 12 apostles when they received the gift of speaking in foreign tongues.
Health insurance – The National Health Insurance House has established a Department of Pharmacoeconomics, which will help ensure more efficient use of public funds and optimize the contracts through which the Romanian government negotiates patient access to treatments. The measure is part of a package of three actions aimed at making the healthcare system more efficient, more transparent, and more patient-centered. The second measure is the establishment of a National Directorate for Internal Public Audit, which will review how the approximately 18 billion Euros administered annually by the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) are spent. The body is to identify vulnerabilities and propose solutions to improve the operations of health insurance funds. The third measure is to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors within national health programs. The project introduces an objective and transparent formula for determining situations where public providers’ capacity is exceeded, allowing private providers to be involved in a clearer and more predictable manner so that patients can receive reimbursed medical services more quickly. This measure is extremely important for patients with serious illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.
Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea faces China’s Xiyu Wang (WTA 148) today in the round of 16 at the 2026 Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament. The Romanian advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Argentina’s Solana Sierra 6-0, 6-0. Cîrstea, ranked 18th in the world, who announced her retirement at the end of the year, is having an exceptional season, with a title in Cluj-Napoca and semifinal appearances in Rouen and Rome. Sorana Cîrstea and Xiyu Wang have met only once before on the WTA Tour, in 2020, in Shenzhen. On that occasion, the Chinese player defeated the Romanian in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Lebanon – The Israeli army has ordered the evacuation of residents from 10 villages in Lebanon following renewed exchanges of fire with the Iranian-backed Shiite extremist group Hezbollah. A spokesperson for the Israeli military said Saturday that the evacuation order was issued in response to Hezbollah’s continued violations of the ceasefire agreement. However, Arab media reported Israeli airstrikes on targets around the Lebanese city of Nabatieh, where at least three people were killed. Since the start of hostilities, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed nearly 3,400 people and displaced over one million, according to Lebanese authorities. International observers fear that a renewed escalation of fighting in Lebanon could complicate the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war. (LS)
