Drone – Romania’s President Nicuşor Dan announced that the drone that crashed on May 29 onto an apartment building in the city of Galați was Russian and presented evidence from the technical report compiled by Romanian government experts. According to the document, inscriptions in Cyrillic characters were identified on the recovered fragments, and the electronic components, navigation systems, control modules, engine, and structural elements show similarities or are identical to those of other Geran-2 drones previously recovered on Romanian territory and definitively identified as having been manufactured in the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, a damage assessment commission has been established in Galaţi. Its members will evaluate each apartment affected by the explosion to determine the extent of the damage and the amount of compensation to be awarded. Experts have concluded that the building’s structural integrity was not compromised, and 27 of the 40 families evacuated after the explosion have already returned to their apartments. The only ones who cannot return home are the victims from the apartment directly damaged by the drone’s impact. The incident involves a 14-year-old boy and his mother, who remain hospitalized. Romania, NATO, and the EU have condemned Moscow’s actions, and in retaliation, Bucharest has decided to declare the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata and to close the consulate. Furthermore, in an interview with the BBC on Saturday, the Romanian president did not rule out the possibility of expelling the Russian ambassador should similar incidents occur again.

Government – The Romanian President Nicuşor Dan is expected to nominate a candidate for the prime minister seat next week. It is not yet clear whether the president will hold further discussions with the parliamentary parties before making his decision public, but what has emerged so far are the positions of the political parties. The PNL maintains its decision not to join an executive alongside the PSD and continues to assert that it prefers to remain in opposition. As for the possibility that the Liberals might support a government led by MEP Eugen Tomac, party leaders dismiss this as mere speculation. The Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) cannot say whether it supports a specific cabinet until it knows its composition and what the prime minister-designate proposes. One thing is certain: the UDMR will not join a minority government and does not believe in the viability of a technocratic executive. According to political sources, the PSD would prefer a political government, not a technocratic one. The Social Democrats would not, however, rule out the idea of supporting Eugen Tomac for the position of prime minister, but they must consult internally before making a decision. On the other hand, in accordance with its leadership’s decision, the USR rules out any collaboration with the PSD. For its part, the AUR has stated that it is willing to join the government only if it is granted the leadership of the cabinet.

Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament after defeating China’s Xiyu Wang 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). This achievement is all the more impressive given that Cîrstea has only reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros once before, 17 years ago in 2009. For a spot in the semifinals, Sorana will face the winner of the match between Mirra Andreeva (WTA No. 8) and Jil Teichmann (WTA No. 170). Cîrstea, ranked 18th in the world, who announced her retirement for the end of the year, is having an exceptional season, with a title in Cluj-Napoca and semifinal appearances in Rouen and Rome.

Nadia Comaneci – The former gymnastics great Nadia Comăneci was awarded the National Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Cross on Saturday. The highest distinction awarded by the Romanian state to athletes was presented to the legendary champion by President Nicuşor Dan during a ceremony held at the Cotroceni Palace. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympics, when the Romanian athlete earned the first perfect 10 in the history of world gymnastics. In her speech, Nadia Comăneci encouraged children to practice sports and dedicated the moment to future generations of champions. The city of Onești, where the former gymnast was born, is celebrating the ‘Nadia Year’ with a series of events dedicated to her achievements, bringing together champions, coaches, and sports enthusiasts.

Health insurance – The National Health Insurance House has established a Department of Pharmacoeconomics, which will help ensure more efficient use of public funds and optimize the contracts through which the Romanian government negotiates patient access to treatments. The measure is part of a package of three actions aimed at making the healthcare system more efficient, more transparent, and more patient-centered. The second measure is the establishment of a National Directorate for Internal Public Audit, which will review how the approximately 18 billion Euros administered annually by the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) are spent. The body is to identify vulnerabilities and propose solutions to improve the operations of health insurance funds. The third measure is to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors within national health programs. The project introduces an objective and transparent formula for determining situations where public providers’ capacity is exceeded, allowing private providers to be involved in a clearer and more predictable manner so that patients can receive reimbursed medical services more quickly. This measure is extremely important for patients with serious illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

Lebanon – The Israeli army has ordered the evacuation of residents from 10 villages in Lebanon following renewed exchanges of fire with the Iranian-backed Shiite extremist group Hezbollah. A spokesperson for the Israeli military said Saturday that the evacuation order was issued in response to Hezbollah’s continued violations of the ceasefire agreement. However, Arab media reported Israeli airstrikes on targets around the Lebanese city of Nabatieh, where at least three people were killed. Since the start of hostilities, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed nearly 3,400 people and displaced over one million, according to Lebanese authorities. International observers fear that a renewed escalation of fighting in Lebanon could complicate the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war. (LS)
