This weekend the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv will be hosting the second leg of the World Rowing Cup, a competition which brings together roughly 400 athletes from 22 countries. According to the Romanian Rowing Federation, the strategy for this competition in Plovdiv is to develop the young talents in rowing. Romania will be represented only by its young rowers as its senior crews, part of the Olympic team, which two weeks ago reaped medals at the World Cup in Seville, are going to take a break.
So, Romania will have two young crews in the men’s pair events. Some of these crews are medalists in the European Youth Championships such as Eduard Angel Moldovan, Nicolae Răzvan Stoian and Sergiu Anfimov. Experts believe the two crews stand good chances to a medal in the aforementioned competition. The Romanian four has been completely revised since the competition in Seville, being entirely made up of beginners. Three of the members are young world champions with Romania’s eight and the fourth one, Sergiu Anfimov, is European champion with Romania’s four. The only experienced hand in Romania’s male team is Mihai Chiruță, bronze medalist in the European Championship, who is also attending the singles.
In the women’s singles, sports fans have pinned their hopes on the 19-year-old athlete, Bianca Ifteni. After the 11th place she got in Seville, she is now running in Plovdiv with good chances of winning one of the six positions. Romania’s four is made up entirely of young rowers. For them, this competition is a major rehearsal before the upcoming World and European Youth Championships.
