HEATWAVE Meteorologists have issued their first code red alert for hot weather this summer due to come into effect on Sunday in almost the entire northern half of Romania. Thermal discomfort is going to be very high with the temperature-humidity index, THI, over 80, and daytime temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. A code orange alert has been issued for Romania’s south, east and west, where highs are expected to reach 38 degrees. The country’s south-east is also under an amber alert with temperatures ranging between 30 and 34 C. The Ministry of Health has called on medical institutions across the country to activate a series of measures aimed at reducing health risks caused by extremely high temperatures. So ambulance crews will be supplemented and public healthcare departments are checking the conditions of providing medical assistance. The population is urged to observe professional medical recommendations and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

WEATHER Germany and Poland are bracing up for a new heatwave with temperatures that might exceed 40 degrees Celsius as the hot air mass that killed scores in Western Europe is moving east. Hot weather alerts have been issued in many European countries, which are also implementing public safety measures. According to scientists, this is the most extended heatwave ever registered in the region as almost half of the nearly 800 European cities are presently facing unprecedented levels of thermal stress. In Belgium, organizers have cancelled a reenactment of the Waterloo battle, which led to the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte.

COMMISSIONER Romania’s interim Justice Minister, Catalin Predoiu, talked in a video-conference with the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of law and consumer protection, Michael McGrath, about the progress Romania registered in implementing the recommendations in the 2025 Rule of law Report. Predoiu says the talks focused on concrete headway in strengthening the independence of high-ranking prosecutors, the functioning of the judicial police and the effectiveness of penal prosecution in the legal system. He also mentioned the latest accomplishments in terms of integrity – lobby legislation, pre and post-employment restrictions in public institutions.

CSAT The President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, has summoned the Country’s Higher Defence Council, also known as CSAT, which is to convene on Monday, the Presidential Administration reports. High on the talks agenda are topics related to Romania’s objectives at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, the forces and means of the Romanian army that can be made available for missions and operations outside the Romanian territory in the year 2027. Talks will also be focusing on implications regarding the continuity of air navigation services against the suspension of Romatsa’s certificate of provider of air navigation services. The participants will also be tackling other topical issues in the field of national security.

THEATRE The International Theatre in Sibiu, central Romania, one of the most important and biggest festivals in the world is due to end on Sunday. The present edition included nearly 850 events, which involved the participation of five thousand artists from 83 countries. The suggestive theme this year – SOUL- was meant to explain that the human soul, be it of artists or spectators, is way above technology. According to tradition, the festival recommends an informative feature with the most captivating shows of the day so that those present in Sibiu may make the most inspired and appropriate choices. Several shows were slated for Saturday, including Faust, directed by Silviu Purcarete, and ‘Rave by Ravel’, the recipient of the UNITER award for best choreography. Eight new names were added on the Walk of Fame on Saturday, such as actresses Fanny Ardant, Ofelia Popii and conductor Cristian Macelaru.
