Government. Romanian political parties have entered the final 48 hours in which they can still form a majority to approve a new government before the parliamentary recess, which begins on July 1. Although there is no confirmed information, the media reports that there is a chance talks between the four parties of the former coalition—PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR—will resume today. The talks are expected to be extremely tense, as attacks between the PSD and the right-wing bloc intensified over the weekend. The Social Democrats accuse the PNL, USR, and UDMR of clinging to power. On the other hand, representatives of the right claim that the PSD is inflexible and is paralyzing the country after refusing to rotate the government and adopt a joint governing program. Amid this deadlock, President Nicuşor Dan has made it clear that he will only meet with political leaders for consultations after they sign an agreement ensuring stable parliamentary support. At this point, the same two proposals for prime minister remain on the table, and no majority has emerged: right-wing forces are backing MEP Siegfried Mureşan, while the Social Democrats are not giving up on Sorin Grindeanu.

CSAT. The Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT) has been convened in Bucharest today. Aaccording to the Presidential Administration, the agenda covers topics related to Romania’s objectives at the NATO summit in Ankara this July and to the forces and resources of the Romanian Armed Forces that may be made available for participation in missions and operations outside Romanian territory starting in 2027. The implications for the continuity of air navigation services and for airspace security will also be discussed, in light of the suspension of ROMATSA’s certificate as an air navigation service provider. This situation could lead to the paralysis of the national airspace and the cancellation of up to 2,000 daily flights, right in the middle of the summer season. The decision to suspend ROMATSA’s certificate for one month was made in February by the Court of Appeals, following a lawsuit regarding employment discrimination. It has only now become an urgent matter, after all avenues of appeal have been exhausted and the grace period has expired, which compels EUROCONTROL to implement the measure. In this context, the CSAT should identify immediate solutions to ensure aviation safety. Other current issues in the field of national security will also be discussed at the CSAT meeting today.

Visit. Talks are taking place today in Bucharest between President Nicuşor Dan and his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog. The visit is part of the ongoing development of bilateral relations and reflects the shared commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two countries. It also highlights the strength of the relationship between Romania and Israel, which is grounded in extensive political and economic cooperation and deep people-to-people ties. The agenda of talks includes ways to develop and deepen bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest, with an emphasis on developing the economic partnership and cooperation in security and defense. Also on the agenda are topics related to sectoral cooperation, including Holocaust education and measures to combat anti-Semitism in Romania, as well as the development of cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts. Recent developments in Romania’s neighborhood and the Black Sea region, as well as in the Middle East, with a focus on their impact on security in both regions and on the global economy, are other important points under discussion. In addition to strategic priorities regarding economic and military cooperation, the visit also carries significant historical weight, as it is linked to the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the 1941 Iași Pogrom.

Champion. Romanian swimmer David Popovici, an Olympic, world, and European champion, won the 200-meter freestyle event on Sunday evening, the final day of the Settecolli International Trophy in Rome. Popovici clocked a time of 1 minute 44.48 seconds in the final, setting a new meet record and the world’s fastest time of the year. Second place went to Italy’s Carlos D’Ambrosio, nearly two seconds behind, while Britain’s Jack McMillan finished third with a time of 1 min 46 sec 71/100. Popovici also won gold in the 100-meter freestyle and silver in the 50-meter freestyle in Rome.

Weather. The heat wave is intensifying sharply across Romania, where on Sunday, in the northern half of the country, the first red heat wave alert of this summer went into effect. Thermal discomfort remains severe, and the heat index (HI) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. According to meteorologists, who have issued red and orange heat warnings for the entire country, relatively large areas will experience extreme maximum temperatures, comparable to the all-time records for June, ranging from 31…32 degrees on the coast to 40…41 degrees in the west. The sky will be mostly clear, except during the midday and evening hours when, particularly in mountainous and foothill areas, there will be temporary heavy cloud cover and periods of showers, thunderstorms, and hail, generally over limited areas. In Bucharest, a heat wave is expected, with particularly intense thermal discomfort and a high of around 39 degrees Celsius. (MI)
