GOVERNMENT Political parties in Romania have one day left to form a majority to endorse a new government, before the parliamentary recess which begins on July 1. Right-wing forces back the MEP Siegfried Mureşan, while the Social Democrats are not giving up on the option of Sorin Grindeanu as a prime minister. The Senate speaker Mircea Abrudean emphasised however that the National Liberal Party will not give a blank check to a cabinet led by Sorin Grindeanu and will also not support a government that includes Liberals who have destabilised the party. On the other hand, the Social Democratic Party announced it will not vote for a government led by Siegfried Mureşan under any circumstances. The parties in the former ruling coalition also say they are not afraid of snap elections, but argue that this option is not a solution at this time. AUR party, however, believes early elections would solve the current crisis. In turn, the leader of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, Kelemen Hunor, says there is no chance of a new government being formed by Tuesday. He says that neither of the two options for a minority government currently submitted to the president can get support in Parliament at this time without the votes of AUR, the UDMR finds unacceptable. President Nicuşor Dan has made it clear that he invites political leaders for consultations only after an agreement for stable parliamentary support has been signed.

DEFENCE A Supreme Defence Council (CSAT) meeting was held in Bucharest on Monday, chaired by president Nicuşor Dan. According to the Presidency, the main topic on the agenda was related to Romania’s goals at the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7 and 8. Romania’s goals are clear, and concern reconfirming and strengthening the country’s profile as a reliable NATO member with a significant contribution to Euro-Atlantic security. At the same time, the summit in Ankara is, according to the Romanian presidency, an opportunity to bring back to the forefront the complicated situation at the Black Sea and the consequences of Russia’s aggression for the region and for Romania, given incidents such as drones entering Romanian airspace.  During CSAT meeting, the participants also analysed the Romanian Army forces and equipment that can be deployed for missions and operations outside Romania in 2027. The CSAT members also looked into the situation of ROMATSA, the sole provider of air navigation services in the national airspace. A prospective suspension of ROMATSA’s activity would lead to geopolitical isolation, they said, and requested the relevant public authorities to find solutions. The decision to suspend ROMATSA’s certification for one month was taken in February by the Court of Appeals, following a lawsuit regarding employment discrimination. The situation has become an emergency now, after all appeals have been used and the period of grace has expired, which binds EUROCONTROL to enforce the measure.

UNEMPLOYMENT Unemployment decreased slightly in Romania at the end of May, reaching 3.21%, the National Employment Agency announced. Almost 257,000 people are officially registered as unemployed. The data shows that the vast majority of the unemployed (over 73%) live in rural areas. In terms of age, the most affected categories are people over 55 and those aged between 40 and 49. At the opposite pole, young people between 25 and 29 years old see the smallest unemployment rate in Romania.

VISIT Romania’s relationship with Israel is strong at a political, economic and human level, the Romanian president Nicuşor Dan said on Monday, at the end of talks in Bucharest with his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog. President Dan recalled that relations between the two countries are strong, and an important link is the community of Jews originating from Romania who contributed to the construction and the development of the state of Israel. He also spoke about collaboration in various fields, including economy, security and defence, agriculture and IT, and mentioned that there is great potential for the development of these relations in both directions. In turn, president Herzog thanked Romania for the profound partnership, as well as for its efforts to curb anti-Semitism. During a speech in the Parliament of Romania, Isaac Herzog spoke about the special bond between Israel and Romania.
