Political crisis – Romania’s President Nicuşor Dan stated on Tuesday that it is the responsibility of the parliamentary parties to propose solutions to the current political crisis, noting that, at this time, there is no majority in Parliament to support a future government. The president also noted that early elections would not bring about fundamental changes in the balance of power and, moreover, would create an image of instability in Romania for months to come. The statements were made following Nicuşor Dan’s meeting with the ambassadors of European Union member states, to whom he conveyed that state institutions are functioning, even though the government has limited powers. At present, the president is considering two options for a government, either a PSD minority government or a minority government formed by the PNL, USR, and UDMR. The PNL says it will not give a blank check to a government led by Social Democratic leader Sorin Grindeanu, while the PSD has announced that it will not vote for a government with Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureşan as prime minister, the option proposed by the PNL, USR, and UDMR. The opposition AUR believes that early elections would resolve the current crisis. The president of the nationalist opposition party, George Simion, has “called on” the head of state to appoint, this week, a person to form the new government and has announced that he is initiating proceedings to suspend Nicuşor Dan. It should be noted that, so far, neither of the two prime ministers designated by the president to form a cabinet has managed to secure a majority in Parliament.

Heat wave – Tuesday was another sweltering day in Romania, but temperatures will drop over the next 24 hours, although the heat wave will persist locally in the west, northwest, north, center, and east, as well as in some parts of the south and southeast. Thermal discomfort will be pronounced, and the heat index (HI) will reach and exceed the critical threshold of 80 units in the northern half of the country and in more limited areas elsewhere. There will be periods of significant atmospheric instability in the south, west, northwest, north, most of the mountainous region, and the central part of the country, locally in the southeast, and sporadically in the east. This will manifest as temporarily heavy cloud cover, showers, some of which will be torrential, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and, in limited areas, storms and small- to medium-sized hail. Over short periods or cumulatively, rainfall amounts will range from 15 to 25 l/m², and in small areas will exceed 30 to 40 l/m². Maximum temperatures will range from 27 to around 37 degrees Celsius.

Drone – A team of specialists from the Romanian Defense Ministry this morning carried out a controlled detonation of an explosive payload from a drone discovered in Tulcea County, in southeastern Romania, near the border with Ukraine. According to a statement from the Defense Ministry, the debris was reported on Monday by a local resident. According to initial assessments, the debris comes from a drone used by the Russian Federation in the April attacks on Ukrainian ports. Authorities state that the operation was carried out safely, and the case has been taken over by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeals. According to the Ministry of National Defense, since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, 29 unauthorized incursions by Russian drones have been detected in the Romanian airspace, and drones or drone fragments have been identified on Romanian territory in approximately 50 instances. The most recent cases include the Russian drone in Galați (east) at the end of May, which crashed on an apartment building and injured two people, and the Ukrainian drone in Constanța (southeast), which went out of control during a mission due to jamming by Russian electronic warfare systems and self-destructed earlier this month.

Brussels – The European Union’s portion of the trade agreement concluded in 2025 with the United States, which will eliminate import duties on many American products, will take effect on July 1, according to an official EU regulatory notice. The EU specified that this regulation will apply until December 31, 2029, with the possibility of an extension. Under the agreement, the EU has agreed to eliminate import duties on U.S. industrial goods and to grant preferential access to U.S. agricultural products. It will also expand duty-free imports of lobster from the U.S., a mini-agreement reached with Donald Trump during his first term. There are several safeguard clauses that allow the EU to suspend concessions if the United States violates the terms of the trade agreement. (LS)
