Storms – Severe storms struck the Bucharest area and several counties in Romania on Tuesday evening and overnight. The damage is considerable, and in a town near the capital, a person inside a car that was struck by a falling tree died. Due to heavy rainfall and massive water infiltration, one of Bucharest’s metro stations was flooded and temporarily closed. In fact, several public transportation lines in the capital experienced disruptions or route changes. Aggregated data show that Bucharest firefighters responded to approximately 1,500 calls overnight, with rescue crews working to remove dozens of fallen trees, some of which had landed on cars, and to pump water out of basements and off the streets. According to a statement from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), besides Bucharest, the severe storms affected 60 localities in 20 counties.
Recess – Romanian MPs are on recess starting today, but they still have unfinished business. The main issue is the formation of a government with full powers, amid a lack of consensus among the parties. On Tuesday, President Nicuşor Dan once again called on the parties represented in Parliament to act responsibly and stated that early elections are not a solution, as they would fundamentally alter parliamentary majorities and project an image of instability. The political crisis could be resolved during an extraordinary session of Parliament, possibly toward the end of July. On the other hand, the bill approving the government ordinance on the SAFE European armament program did not receive the necessary number of votes on Tuesday to be adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, so debate on the bill will resume during the next legislative session. Instead, MPs adopted a significant package of laws essential for the milestones in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon grass-court tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year, on Tuesday after defeating Czech player Sara Bejlek 6-1, 7-6. In her next match, she will face Australian Kimberly Birrell. The only previous head-to-head match between the two was won by Sorana Cîrstea in 2023 at Indian Wells. Meanwhile, Romanian Gabriela Ruse lost in the first round at Wimbledon, being defeated by American Caty McNally 7-5, 6-3. Jaqueline Cristian and Irina Begu were also eliminated in the first round, making Sorana Cîrstea the only Romanian among the four players in the main draw at Wimbledon to advance to the second round.
Customs duty – A flat customs duty of 3 euros per item is being levied, as of July 1, on packages valued at less than 150 euros entering the European Union, largely through e-commerce. Until now, these packages were exempt from customs duties at the EU level. For Romanians, the new 3-euro fee is in addition to a 25-lei logistics fee per package (equivalent to about 5 euros), which has been in effect nationwide since the beginning of this year. Experts warn that the simultaneous application of these two fees could discourage online shopping from outside the EU. At the same time, businesses involved in such transactions may need to rethink their business models. E-commerce has become an important part of how Europeans shop, and in recent years, the number of low-value packages originating from outside the EU has grown exponentially.
Ireland – On July 1, Ireland took over the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Cyprus, with an agenda focused on negotiating the bloc’s long-term budget. Dublin’s priorities also include accelerating the development of strategic infrastructure, clean energy, and affordable housing. Ireland will also promote a true Union of Economies and Investments and will advocate for a more ambitious trade policy. Security will be another major focus of action in light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, instability in the Middle East, and the emergence of new hybrid threats. Last but not least, Ireland will promote the EU’s enlargement processes, paying particular attention to Montenegro, Albania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine.
Fraud – The interim government in Bucharest has allocated funds to relocate nearly 400 elderly people, people with disabilities, and vulnerable patients, victims of an organized crime group in Bihor County (west). The group allegedly exploited them for financial gain under the guise of a humanitarian and charitable organization. On Tuesday, the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) conducted approximately 30 searches at the homes of individuals and at company offices as part of one of the largest human trafficking investigations, involving over 2,000 victims exploited since 2020. Prosecutors say the criminal group allegedly misled donors, family members, and others interested in providing care services, in order to obtain significant sums of money from donations, sponsorships, contributions, pensions, disability benefits, and social assistance. Investigators claim that the financial loss exceeds 13 million lei (approximately 2.6 million euros). (LS)
