The interior of the Casino continues to impress today with its highly refined architectural details. The centerpiece is the monumental staircase, built of marble and decorated with handcrafted wrought iron railings. The halls were recently restored to bring back the shine of the original gold and stucco. The high ceilings are decorated with murals that respect the marine theme of the entire edifice. The mosaic floors were restored using techniques that honor the geometric design from a century ago. The furniture and crystal chandeliers were chosen to recreate the 1910 atmosphere. Modern climate control and lighting systems were discreetly integrated, so as not to affect the historical aesthetics. Restorers worked for years to clean the layers of paint applied during the communist period. The result is a faithful recovery of the palace where Europe’s kings and aristocrats once gathered. The interior is now a versatile space for high-profile events. (EE)
