MOLDOVA – The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, announced his resignation on Friday after only eight months in office. In a message posted on social media, Munteanu said he had concluded that he could no longer carry out his mandate in line with his principles and convictions. Radio Chișinău reports that the prime minister’s resignation, which triggers the resignation of the entire government, comes against the backdrop of a corruption scandal involving unjustifiable high salaries at several state owned companies. Parliamentary factions will be called next week for consultations to designate a candidate for the position of prime minister, President Maia Sandu announced. She reminded the public that the Republic of Moldova has taken on several commitments in its path toward EU accession, which must be fulfilled by September 1. In this context, the head of state urged acting ministers and public officials involved in these processes, to continue their work.

DRONE – Ukraine’s defense Ministry has responded to the questions raised by Romania’s interim minister Radu Miruță regarding the explosion of a Ukrainian maritime drone that occurred last month in the Port of Constanța (southeast). In its reply, the Ukrainian side confirms that on June 4 it lost contact with four Sargan 3000 naval drones, which were heading towards the eastern area of the Black Sea, and could no longer cancel their self detonation commands. On the following morning, the Romanian Naval Forces were informed of the danger roughly 35 minutes before the drone exploded. No casualties were recorded. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, the incident in the Port of Constanța was isolated and most likely caused by Russian electronic warfare actions. Romania’s Ministry of Defense requested that Ukraine establish a permanent technical communication channel between the two countries’ naval forces, and operational procedures have been agreed so that both sides can inform each other in time about risks in the Black Sea, the Romanian ministry announced. Additionally, Radu Miruță formally asked the Ukrainian side to ensure that all naval drones launched in the Black Sea are programmed to self detonate in a safe area outside Romania’s zones of interest, should they reach those areas for any reason.

FUEL – The interim Prime Minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, says he expects fuel prices to begin decreasing in the coming days, as companies start selling stocks purchased at lower prices. He hopes that, in the second half of the month, gasoline and diesel will return to the levels seen before March, prior to the conflict between the United States and Iran. If this does not happen, Bolojan added, a new price cap scheme will be prepared. The price of a liter of diesel increased on average by 35 bani, after the three month period of reduced excise duty ended on July 1. On Thursday, diesel was sold at an average price of 9.57 bani per liter. (1 euro = approximately 5.2 bani).

MOTORWAY – Romania and the Republic of Moldova have signed the contract for the design and construction of section four of the A8 Union Motorway, Târgu Mureș – Iași – Ungheni, financed through SAFE funds. The contract is valued at 3.57 billion lei (700 million euros). The Italian consortium that won the bid will design and build the final 15.5 km of the A8 motorway and the first 5 km of motorway beyond the Prut River, inside the Republic of Moldova. The contract duration is 46 months, including 10 months for design and 36 months for construction.

AID – A military aircraft has taken off from the 90th Air Transport Base in Otopeni, near the capital, on a strategic air transport mission through which Romania is providing humanitarian assistance to Venezuela, affected by the earthquakes that occurred on June 24, 2026. According to Romania’s Ministry of National Defense, the aircraft is carrying barracks equipment and medical supplies intended for the population of the Yaracuy region, which was severely hit by the seismic events that caused major infrastructure damage. The mission is being carried out after Venezuelan authorities requested international support and the European Commission activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), through which participating states mobilize resources to assist affected areas. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense emphasize that this mission reflects Romania’s commitment to contributing, together with European and international partners, to providing humanitarian assistance to communities impacted by natural disasters and other emergency situations.

FIRE – The Romanian firefighters deployed in France have been operating under the coordination of local authorities, helping to limit the spread of the fire and protect homes located in threatened areas, Radio Romania’s correspondent in Paris reports. Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs Romanian citizens who are in, transiting, or planning to travel to France that, starting July 2, a red alert for vegetation fires (very severe risk) has been issued in areas in the south of the country. MAE advises Romanian citizens to avoid traveling to areas where fires are ongoing or where there is an imminent risk of them breaking out, to strictly follow the instructions of local authorities, and to monitor official public information sources at all times. In this context, MAE recommends checking real time updated information on the website Inforoute 11: https://www.inforoute11.fr/. Romanian citizens who are in danger or witness a fire are advised to call the emergency numbers 112 or 18. (EE)
