INVESTIGATION — In Caracal, in southern Romania, investigators continue the search at the home of Gheorghe Dincă, the man who alleged, after being detained more than a week ago, that he had killed two teenagers, 15 year-old Alexandra Măceşanu and 18 year-old Luiza Melencu. New biological samples were collected from the suspect’s courtyard and home. The search now focuses on finding clues to confirm that Luiza Melencu, who has been missing since April, was present in the suspects home. Dinca alleges that he has thrown Luizas body in the Danube. The Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), which is conducting the inquiry, said that the ash collected from Dincă’s home only showed traces of Alexandra’s DNA, the girl who went missing on the 24th of July, and who managed to call emergency services. This confirms the suspect’s statements that he burned her body. The reaction of the authorities was inadmissibly late, and this has led to a number of people in emergency response resigning or getting fired.
WASHINGTON – Romanian Minister of Communications Alexandru Petrescu is on a three day working visit to the US, until August 7. According to the ministry, the visit focuses on developing the communications sector, enhancing international cooperation in information technology, improving cybersecurity, and implementing government policies to support the data economy. Under the Romania- US strategic partnership in cybersecurity, Minister Petrescu will meet high ranking federal officials dealing with communications policy, such as the State Department, the Federal Communications Commission, the Department of Commerce, the Pentagon, security agencies, as well as telecom operators and global suppliers of telecom equipment.
FESTIVAL – Sfantu Gheorghe, in the Danube Delta, hosts starting today the 16th edition of the Anonimul International Independent Film Festival. The festival opens with director Jim Jarmuschs The Dead Dont Die. 6 feature length foreign and domestic movies have been selected for the official competition. Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa, winner in Cannes in 2018, is the special guest at the event. He will be presented with the special Anonimul Trophy for his contribution to world cinema. The audience will be presented with a retrospective with 7 of his movies, with screenings followed by Q&A sessions. The festival lasts until August 11th, and in the meantime there will be screenings of award winning movies, Q&A sessions, debates with filmmakers and critics, etc. The section Fluidity will feature four documentaries on other artforms.
TENNIS — Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, currently 4th seeded in the world, has qualified straight to the second round of the WTA tournament in Toronto, Canada, with 2.8 million dollars in prize money. Halep, the winner of the tournament in 2016 and 2018, will face off against the winner of the game between Kristina Mladenovic of France and American Jennifer Brady. In the doubles, Halep will stand next to 16 year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez, playing against the pair Nicole Melichar of the US and Czech player Kveta Peschke.
GAUDEAMUS — This is the last day of the Litoral Gaudeamus Fair, organized by Radio Romania in the Black Sea resort of Mamaia. The visitors have available 30 publishing house stands, and they can attend the award ceremonies, as well as the traditional music and dance events. During the five days of the fair, visitors got special discounts for books, and could attend special events and book launches. The Gaudeamus Fair also highlighted Radio Romania projects, such as Books Returning Home, where volunteers donate books which then are made available to people who cannot afford them.
