VISIT Romania’s president Nicuşor Dan Thursday received his Indian counterpart Droupadi Murmu, who is on a state visit to Bucharest until Saturday. The talks were aimed at consolidating the extensive bilateral partnership, strengthening cultural, academic, research and innovation, and sports exchanges, as well as deepening economic cooperation. According to the Romanian presidency, the visit marks the resumption of top-level political dialogue after a two-decade gap. On Friday, a bilateral economic forum will be held, opened by the two heads of state and attended by members of the business communities in Romania and India, as well as the Romanian authorities.
NATO Romania is a beneficiary of fresh NATO investments on the eastern flank, more specifically military investments in the Alliance’s energy infrastructure. The North Atlantic Council has approved a joint financing plan for 2027-2031, which includes an energy infrastructure upgrade programme. Of the total EUR 27 billion, several billion will go to investments in Romania. Plans include the building or revamping of fuel depots, distribution networks and pipelines, especially in the east and southeast of the Alliance. The goal is that NATO troops can be moved, supplied and supported quickly in the event of a crisis or conflict. For Romania, this decision is important, because the country is located on NATO’s eastern flank and at the Black Sea, a region viewed as strategic after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The port of Constanta, the “Mihail Kogălniceanu” Air Base (southeast) and the military transport infrastructure are part of the Alliance’s broader effort to be able to quickly move forces and equipment to the East, hence the interest in the fuel infrastructure.
PARLIAMENT Romanian senators and deputies will suspend their recess next week for an extraordinary parliamentary session. They will meet primarily in order to debate and vote on bills that are part of the obligations undertaken under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The most controversial piece of legislation in this package, and which must be endorsed by the end of August, concerns public sector wages, and it has already generated a series of protests. The bill on the reform of the National Integrity Agency is also among the pieces of legislation parliamentary parties are still to agree on.
PASSPORT The Romanian passport currently ranks 11th in the Henley Passport Index, the best position for Romania in the history of this ranking, the interim interior minister Cătălin Predoiu announced on Thursday. According to him, Romanian nationals can travel to 178 destinations without a prior visa. Minister Predoiu said this is the result of a nation-wide effort, supported by EU integration, the development of international partnerships and the consolidation of public institutions. The interior ministry has a direct contribution, through the security of travel documents, border management to Schengen standards, the fight against illegal migration and cross-border crime, as well as through constant police cooperation with European and international partners, Cătălin Predoiu said in a Facebook post.
ROWING Forty-one athletes will represent Romania at the European Rowing Championships, taking place between July 31 and August 2 in Varese (Italy), the national team’s senior coach Dorin Alupei announced on Thursday. He also announced Romania’s registration of an athlete for the Paralympic event for the first time. At last year’s European Championships, held in Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Romania won 7 medals, of which 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. (AMP)
