No Romanian football side will play this year in the Champions League, as Universitatea Craiova were eliminated in the competition’s qualifying matches by the Bulgarian side Levski Sofia.

The Romanian and Bulgarian champions drew 2-all in the return match of the second qualifying round held in Craiova on Wednesday, with the Bulgarian side having won the first match 1-nil in Sofia a week earlier. The match in Craiova began with two goals from the visitors, scored by the Brazilian player Everton Bala in the 13th minute and the Portuguese player Aldair Neves three minutes later. The hosts narrowed the gap late in the first half through Nicuşor Bancu. The equaliser came three minutes after the break, thanks to a goal scored from a free kick by Adrian Rus. The second half was dominated by the Craiova team, who attacked relentlessly. However, it was the Bulgarian side who had the best chances to score, hitting the goalpost twice.

Following their elimination from the Champions League, Universitatea Craiova will play in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. Their opponent will be the Finnish champions KuPS Kuopio. The Nordic side were eliminated in the second Champions League qualifying round by Azerbaijan’s FC Sabah, losing both the away match, 1-nil, and the home match, 2-nil.
