Energy alert – Romania is on energy alert throughout August, and authorities are resuming operations on the Danube today to divert part of the river’s flow to the Cernavodă nuclear power plant (southeast). Four barges are being sunk in a controlled manner in an effort to raise the water level and keep the plant’s only operational reactor at present running. According to the Romanian Waters National Administration, following previous interventions, the water level has risen significantly, but the situation remains difficult. The Danube’s flow rate at the country’s border has dropped to a historic low of 1,400 cubic meters per second, a level that is expected to remain stable until August 12. In today’s meeting, the government may adopt new emergency measures to prevent power supply issues and imbalances in the National Energy System. The government aims to impose mandatory consumption limits during peak hours on approximately 80 major Romanian companies in strategic sectors, such as steelmaking, the automotive industry, chemical fertilizer plants, and aluminum production. At the same time, officials are also calling on the public to reduce electricity waste, especially in the evening. In Bucharest, all institutions under the jurisdiction of the City Hall must take measures to reduce electricity consumption. The electric buses in the Transportation Company’s fleet will not be charged in the evening, when energy consumption is at its highest. Maintenance activities will also be performed in the evening, and the industrial lighting in the warehouses will be dimmed. Termoenergetica Bucharest has announced that it will shut down the pressure-boosting pumps, and the Municipal Public Lighting Company will reduce the light output throughout the month of August.

Parliament – On Thursday, the Romanian Senate adopted the legislative proposal to ratify the loan agreement (the first of its kind for development policies in the areas of fiscal policy and economic growth) between Romania and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, signed in Washington this spring. Also on Thursday, Romanian senators adopted the highly controversial bill approving the National Strategy and Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation 2026–2030 in the same form as that passed by the Chamber of Deputies. The bill, a milestone in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), will be sent to the president for promulgation after a two-day period during which lawmakers may refer it to the Constitutional Court. On Wednesday, Parliament also adopted other laws that represent milestones in the PNRR, the Integrity Law and the Law on the Decarbonization of the Energy Sector.

UNTOLD – The UNTOLD Festival is taking place as of today until Sunday in Cluj-Napoca (northwestern Romania). For the third consecutive year, the event ranks third on the global Top 100 Festivals list. Artists such as Sting, The Chainsmokers, James Hype, and Maddix are set to perform on the festival’s stages. UNTOLD 2026 isn’t just about the main stages. The secondary stages, Galaxy, Alchemy, Daydreaming, as well as Time, Retro Fantesia, Tramvai, and Soul Circle, offer a diverse musical experience, ranging from techno and house to urban music, live acts, and alternative concepts.

Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea (ranked 18thin the world), the 14thseed, was eliminated on Wednesday in her debut match at the WTA 1,000 tournament in Toronto, Canada, which offers total prize money of over 7,400,000 U.S. dollars. She was defeated in the second round by Australian Maya Joint in two even sets, 6-4, 6-4. In 2013, in Toronto, Sorana Cîrstea achieved the best result of her career at a WTA 1,000 tournament. She reached the final, where she lost to Serena Williams.

Weather – Until Saturday, Romania is under a heat wave advisory, with warnings of thermal discomfort, tropical nights, and atmospheric instability. Meteorologists have announced that the heat wave will continue to persist today and will intensify across all regions, but tomorrow it will decrease in intensity and be confined to the southern half of the country. A code red heat wave alert is in effect through tomorrow morning in the west and northwest. Also through tomorrow morning, a code orange and a code yellow alert for persistent and intense heat are in effect across the rest of the country. The heat index (HI) is reaching and exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units, and maximum temperatures range from 30 to 41 degrees Celsius. In Bucharest, the temperature was 32 degrees at noon. Meanwhile, for today, meteorologists have issued a code yellow alert for atmospheric instability valid throughout Romania, except for the eastern and southeastern parts of the country. There will be gusty winds with speeds of 50–70 km/h (and, in limited areas, over 80 km/h), showers, lightning, and isolated small hail. Over short periods, rainfall amounts will be 15–20 l/m², and in mountainous areas, in limited areas, 30–50 l/m². (LS)
