Universitatea Craiova football team ended in a draw 1-1 Thursday’s away match against the Finnish team KuPS Kuopio in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. The Romanian champions controlled the game in the first half, which they ended with a lead thanks to a goal scored by Ștefan Baiaram in the 39th minute. In the second half, the hosts refused to be dominated, came out strong, and evened the score. In the 72nd minute, the Finnish side equalized through Nicaraguan Jaime Moreno. The score remained unchanged until the end of the match, so the fate of qualification for the Europa League playoffs will be decided next Thursday in Craiova. If Universitatea defeats KuPS Kuopio, they will play for a spot in the Europa League group stage against the loser of the match between the Armenian team Ararat and the Slovenian team Celje, who are facing off in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. In the first leg, the Armenians won 2-1.
If they are eliminated by KuPS Kuopio, Universitatea will play in the Conference League playoffs against the loser of the match between Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers FC and the Albanian team KF Egnatia. In the first leg, the Irish team won 3-1. Romania’s representative in the third qualifying round of the Conference League, CFR Cluj, was defeated at home by the Norwegian team Tromsø, score 5-0. The Transylvanian club thus suffered its most crushing home defeat in the history of its participation in European competitions. The second leg is scheduled for next Thursday in Norway.
We remain in the world of football, to inform you that matches counting toward the fourth round of the Romanian Super League championship will take place this weekend. On Friday, there’s just one game: UTA Arad vs. Rapid Bucharest. Two matches are scheduled for Saturday. In Ovidiu, Farul Constanța will face Csikszereda, and in Bucharest, Dinamo will take on FC Voluntari. Sunday kicks off with a traditional Romanian football derby. In Galați, Oțelul will face Petrolul Ploiești. Another historic derby will take place in Craiova, between Universitatea and FC Argeș. On Monday, FC Botoșani will host Corvinul Hunedoara, and FCSB will play Sepsi in Sfântu Gheorghe. The Cluj derby, between CFR and Universitatea, has been postponed until October. FCSB and Rapid lead the Superliga standings with 7 points each. Three teams follow with 6 points each: Universitatea Craiova, Universitatea Cluj, and FC Argeș. (LS)
