ENERGY Romania’s interim cabinet met in an emergency session on Friday to establish mandatory peak-hour power restrictions for major industrial energy consumers. Affected industrial giants will receive 24-hour advance notice, with mandatory cuts taking effect only if voluntary reductions fail to meet national power demand. The measures are part of an emergency risk-management framework introduced as prolonged drought conditions severely strain the country’s power grid. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan assured the public that critical continuous-operation infrastructure, including hospitals and residential areas, will remain fully connected to the national grid. In yesterday’s session, alongside drought mitigation measures, the cabinet adopted several decrees addressing crisis readiness for regional conflict, public health emergencies and earthquake risks. Also on Friday, the government endorsed through a memorandum a risk-management mechanism entitled Piperine Strategic, whose main objective is to ensure that Romania successfully meets the strict milestones and targets required for Payment Requests No. 5 and No. 6 under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

FESTIVAL The 11th edition of the Electronic Music Festival UNTOLD, which comes third in a world ranking, continues in Cluj-Napoca, north-western Romania. Over 120 thousand music-lovers from Romania and abroad attended the Festival’s first day, on Thursday, when legends of international and Romanian music stepped onto the stage. The most important moment was the concert by the famous British singer, Sting. Concerts, shows and numerous other events have been scheduled during the festival, which is due to take place for four days and four nights. The 127 meter long and 38 meters high stage is the biggest in the history of the aforementioned festival, which this year brings together about 200 local and international artists, such as Zara Larsson, Lewis Capaldi, Flo Rida and Martin Garrix. The festival is to end on Monday on music by Padre Guilherme, a Catholic priest from Portugal famous for the way he mixes religious hymns with electronic music.

WEATHER More than half of Romania’s counties are still under a code yellow alert for extremely hot weather, with thermal discomfort and tropical nights. The Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) is expected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units, while the largest part of Romania’s south-western and central regions will be seeing atmospheric instability with intensified winds and thunderstorms on isolated areas. The highs of the day will be ranging between 23 and 36 degrees Celsius and the lows between 9 and 24 degrees.

UNIONS Major healthcare unions have submitted counterproposals for Romania’s upcoming public sector pay legislation, demanding firm guarantees against income cuts, immediate wage increases for the majority of healthcare workers upon enactment, and clearly identified funding sources. Union leadership is also calling on the Ministry of Labor and Parliament to publicly commit to the proposed pay structure. Education unions simultaneously reaffirmed their key demands, which include reversing proposed bonus cuts, preserving merit allowances and honoring wage grids promised in prior negotiations. Reforming the public pay system is a key milestone under Romania’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) agreed with the EU, but the government’s draft proposal has already sparked public protests.

FOOTBALL Romanian football champions Universitatea Craiova secured a one-all draw away against Finnish side KuPS Kuopio on Thursday evening in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. The return leg will take place in Craiova on August 13. By contrast, CFR Cluj faces near-certain elimination from European competition following a crushing 5-0 home defeat to Norwegian side Tromsø IL in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round.
