The European Swimming Championships, currently taking place in Paris, France, have already brought Romania its first gold medal. Cătălin Preda is the new European champion in high diving. Halfway through the competition, after the first two rounds of dives, he was in fourth place, while the other Romanian competitor, former world champion Constantin Popovici, was in third. In the final, however, Preda prevailed with a total of 411.60 points, while Popovici finished seventh with 325.40 points. The silver medal went to Italy’s Andrea Barnaba, with 386 points, while France’s Gary Hunt took bronze with 382.50 points.
As of Monday, the swimmers competing in the events held in the Olympic pool will enter the competition. The leading favourite in the Romanian delegation is David Popovici, Olympic champion in the 200-metre freestyle and former world record-holder in the 100-metre freestyle.
Romania won two medals at the World Athletics Championships for athletes under the age of 20, held in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States. Alexandra Ştefania Uţă won gold in the 400-metre hurdles, setting a new championship record of 55.33 seconds. Daria Vrînceanu took silver in the triple jump with a leap of 13 metres and 70 centimetres, her best result of the season. First place went to Bulgaria’s Viktoria Anghelova, with a jump of 13 metres and 91 centimetres.
Matches in the fourth round of the Romanian football SuperLiga were played over the weekend. On Friday, in Arad, UTA and Rapid Bucharest drew 0–0. On Saturday, in Ovidiu, Farul Constanţa defeated Csikszereda 3–2, while in Bucharest, Dinamo beat FC Voluntari 4–0. Two fixtures were played on Sunday. In Ploieşti, Petrolul defeated Oţelul Galaţi 1–0. By the same scoreline, FC Argeş won away at Craiova against Universitatea. The final two matches of the round are scheduled for Monday: FC Botoşani against Corvinul Hunedoara and Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe against FCSB. Argeş currently lead the table with 9 points, followed by Rapid with 8.
