ASSUMPTION – Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians around the world celebrate on Saturday the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, marked every year on 15 August. One of the most important religious holidays in the Orthodox calendar, the day is known as the Dormition of the Mother of God and is marked by religious services held at churches and monasteries across the country. The feast also marks the end of a two-week fasting period for believers. Thousands of Romanians celebrate their name day on this occasion.
SWIMMING – Romanian swimmer David Popovici, 21, an Olympic, world and European champion, won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle final at the European Championships in Paris on Friday, with a time of 1:44.15. He confirmed his dominance in the event, in which he has not been beaten since 2023, at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. On Wednesday, also in Paris, David Popovici won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle, setting a new championship record of 46.56 seconds. The Romanian is the first swimmer in history to win both the 100m and 200m freestyle events at three different editions of the European Championships.
GOVERNMENT – Important measures for education and industry were on the agenda of Friday’s government meeting in Bucharest. The interim government has unlocked more than 700 posts for new state-run nurseries built under the EU-funded National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), paving the way for thousands of new places for children to open in the autumn. Ministers also approved the resumption of graphite mining in Gorj county, southern Romania, a critical raw material for battery production, overturning a previous decision to permanently close the mines. Romania has three projects on a list adopted by the European Commission last year following a call launched under the European Parliament and Council regulation establishing a framework for secure and sustainable supplies of critical raw materials. The regulation includes the development of infrastructure needed for extraction, as well as the installation of processing equipment to turn raw material into high-purity graphite, essential for battery production, particularly for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
NAVY DAY – The Romanian Naval Forces are holding a series of events in the garrisons of Constanţa, Mangalia, Brăila, Galaţi, Tulcea and Bucharest to mark Romanian Navy Day, celebrated every year on 15 August. The programme includes military and religious ceremonies, maritime and river exercises, displays of military equipment and weapons, interactive workshops, military band concerts and events promoting a career in the armed forces. This morning, sailors held a military and religious ceremony on the seafront in Constanţa to mark Remembrance Day, followed by a ceremony awarding distinctions and promotions to the next military rank. More than 3,500 Romanian and foreign military personnel will take part in Saturday’s military ceremony. The maritime and coastal training sequences will involve more than 50 ships and vessels, 15 military and civilian aircraft, two armoured amphibious vehicles and five artillery pieces, the Romanian Naval Forces said. This year’s event will also feature, for the first time, the corvette “Contraamiral August Roman” 261 and the minehunter M 271 “Căpitan Constantin Dumitrescu”, both of which recently entered service. Allied forces will be represented by two Turkish Navy vessels, a frigate and a corvette, a Turkish Coast Guard vessel, a Bulgarian Coast Guard vessel, two F-18 Hornet aircraft from the Spanish Air Force’s NATO enhanced Air Policing mission, and an Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft from the French Navy.
DRONE – Romania’s Defence Ministry said on Friday it had been notified via the national emergency number 112 of a drone that had crashed near the village of Luncaviţa in Tulcea county, south-eastern Romania, five kilometres from the border with Ukraine. According to a statement issued to the press on Friday, the aerial target was not detected by the Defence Ministry’s radar surveillance systems as it was flying at a very low altitude. The drone crashed in a wooded area and, according to preliminary information, caused no casualties or material damage, the statement said.
ECONOMY – Romania’s economy stagnated in the second quarter of 2026, following a contraction in the first three months of the year. Official data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics showed that the economy shrank by 0.8% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Against this backdrop, economists expect Romania’s economy to end the year at around the same level as in 2025.
INFLATION – The National Bank of Romania raised its inflation forecasts on Thursday, both for the end of this year, from 5.5% to 6.1%, and for the end of 2027, from 2.9% to 3.4%. The revision was driven mainly by renewed energy pressures. BNR Governor Mugur Isărescu said fuel prices had reacted quickly to the effects of the war in the Middle East, while heatwaves and drought had further complicated the situation. The central bank nevertheless expects a sharp decline in inflation as the effects of last year’s VAT and excise duty increases fade. The BNR also announced that it was postponing a cut in its policy interest rate until next year and stressed the importance of attracting European funds, particularly as Romania’s allocations under the PNRR are due to expire at the end of this month.
FOOTBALL – Romanian champions Universitatea Craiova have reached the Europa League play-off round after beating Finnish side KuPS Kuopio 2-1 at home on Thursday evening. The first leg ended 1-1. The result also secured the Romanian champions a place in the league phase of a European competition. Universitatea Craiova will face Ararat-Armenia in the Europa League play-off. CFR Cluj, meanwhile, were knocked out of the Conference League by Norwegian side Tromsø IL. (EE)
