COURT Magistrates of Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) have ruled over the notifications about the new integrity law, which is also a PNRR milestone, tabled by the Romanian President, Nicusor Dan as well as by the PNL and USR. The Court has ruled as constitutional the amendment tabled by the PSD and AUR (the Social-Democratic and populist ultranationalist opposition) on the retroactive sanctioning of the local officials in incompatibility, whereas the other, on the obligation of declaring the income and interests in the case of lifetime partners has been ruled as unconstitutional and the law will be sent back to Parliament to be brought in line with the constitutional regulations. The CCR session came against the controversies in the public space caused by a recent unannounced meeting in the Senate between the CCR president, Simina Tanasescu and the acting Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan. The Higher Council of the Magistrates, court leaderships and magistrates associations have called for urgent public clarifications, as they believe such an informal meeting raises legitimate question marks and is affecting the trust in the impartiality of justice. In response, the CCR chief, Simina Tanasescu, has vehemently rejected any speculation, adding the talks were focusing exclusively on administrative and institutional issues without any connection to the pending cases.

WAGES Romania’s President Nicuşor Dan is expected to broker a new meeting between the leaders of the pro-European parties in Parliament this week, focusing on the new law governing public-sector pay. Interim Labour Minister Dragoş Pîslaru stressed that the president will have a new version of the draft law at his disposal for the talks. Trade unions also oppose this version, saying it would lead to pay cuts. If Parliament fails to adopt the new law by 31 August, Romania risks losing around 770 million euros in funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Meanwhile, a new extraordinary parliamentary session could be convened this week. The agenda is expected to include, first and foremost, President Nicuşor Dan’s request for the reconsideration of the law on completing hydropower plants stalled in protected areas. Senators are also expected to revisit bills related to the National Rural Development Programme and the State Domains Agency.

GREECE A new contingent of 40 Romanian firefighters has taken over the mission in Greece from their colleagues, who spent the past two weeks assisting Greek authorities in extinguishing fires and monitoring high-risk areas east of Athens. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the firefighters from the first rotation helped extinguish blazes in several parts of the Attica region and participated in joint training sessions and exercises alongside Greek teams and French forces deployed in Greece. The assistance program, funded by the European Union, was designed to support European communities severely affected by devastating fires in previous years.

ENERGY Romania’s Environment Ministry will draw up this week a legislative measure providing for an 80-million-euro funding scheme aimed at increasing electricity storage capacity. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan warned that the current energy crisis has shown that Romania lacks sufficient storage capacity. He said the Environment Ministry, through the Environment Fund, the Energy Ministry, through the Modernisation Fund, and the Finance Ministry had supported photovoltaic and wind power generation but had failed to place sufficient emphasis on storage. The scheme will be implemented through the Modernisation Fund and will make available twice the amount provided by the Environment Ministry.

OMAN US President Donald Trump threatened on Monday that the United States could bomb Oman if authorities in Muscat “stand in the way” of an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran and Oman have been negotiating for weeks without Washington’s participation, ‘The Guardian’ reports. Iranian and Omani officials have been discussing terms for vessel passage through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the most critical maritime routes for global energy transport—for several weeks; the strait lies between the coasts of Iran and Oman. Donald Trump also told Fox News that his administration had established a secret, direct communication channel with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Tehran regime’s primary military body. However, this claim was denied by Iran, which has been almost constantly blocking the strait since late February following an Israeli-American attack that triggered the current war in the Middle East. The United States responded by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports. Before the war broke out, approximately one-fifth of global oil production passed through the Strait of Hormuz, meaning any prolonged disruption to traffic could have major consequences for international energy markets.
