Parliament convenes in extraordinary session for critical PNRR milestones

Romania’s bicameral Parliament is today convening for a three-day extraordinary session during the final week available to meet outstanding National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) milestones agreed upon with the European Commission.

Senators are fast-tracking debates on the Hydrogen Law, a key milestone without which the country risks losing a 2.84 billion Euro payment installment.

Meanwhile, Deputies must re-examine the Integrity Law, following Constitutional Court objections, alongside new rules regarding high school admission exams.

Adoption of the new public sector salary law, a crucial PNRR milestone tied to 770 million Euro, remains uncertain. Despite the August 31 deadline, the draft remains under party review following talks with President Nicușor Dan, with only the Liberals so far announcing support for the latest proposal heavily contested by trade unions.

Central Bank warns political instability risks impacting the Leu exchange rate

Uncertainties stemming from the domestic political situation pose a direct risk to the exchange rate of the Leu, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) warned in the minutes of its latest monetary policy meeting. The Bank highlighted additional elevated risks tied to the escalating conflict in the Middle East and, above all, the country’s twin fiscal and trade deficits.

The Central Bank stressed the critical need for political and governmental stability, alongside a continued fiscal correction to bring both deficits under control.

On the sidelines of the summit, several nations are expected to announce additional financial aid, while France and Great Britain are preparing a technology transfer to allow Ukraine to manufacture European long-range missiles.

Early warning alert issued in Galați County following airspace incident

The Ministry of National Defense reported that radar surveillance systems detected intermittent signals in the airspace of neighboring Moldova, with one signal later appearing near Târgu Bujor in Galați County.

In response, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter were scrambled to monitor the situation, while emergency authorities were alerted to issue public safety warnings in the affected area.
