Covid-19.
New restrictions are in place in Romania from today, amid high Covid infection
rates and fatalities. Face mask wearing is mandatory in both enclosed and outdoor
spaces and access to most public spaces requires the Covid green pass.
Night-time movement is banned for people who are not fully vaccinated and kindergartens
and schools are on an unplanned two-week holiday.
Army
Day. The army remains a solid landmark and enjoys public trust, contributing to
maintaining the stability needed to develop Romanian society, said president
Klaus Iohannis on Monday at an event to mark Army Day. He thanked all those who
served their country and emphasised that the professionalism and commitment
shown by the military in theatres of operation contributed to Romania’s
Euro-Atlantic and European path and to the consolidation of its solid Strategic
Partnership with the United States. Low-key festivities are held today to
celebrate Army Day, including an event outside the WWII Memorial and the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier in Bucharest, with Romanian Air Forces planes conducting
a flypast. Similar events are taking place at memorials in honour of Romanian
soldiers in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic,
Russia, Poland, the Republic of Moldova and Hungary. According to defence
ministry figures, more than 90,000 Romanian soldiers were killed, almost 60,000
reported missing in action and more than 330,000 wounded in combat WWII.
King. The
100th anniversary of the late King Michael I, Romania’s last
sovereign, is celebrated today. Public radio stations are broadcasting a show
entitled Romania needs art, produced together with Margareta of Romania Royal
Foundation in support of the Young Talent programme. The rooms of the former
Royal Palace now part of the National Museum of Art in Bucharest are today open
for visitors, who can visit the royal reception area, the princes’ staircase
and the throne hall, as well as an exhibition of royal portraits containing
works of art depicting King Michael at different ages. The Military Museum is
hosting an exhibition entitled Michael I – a century of history. King Michael
died on 5th December 2017 and is buried at the royal necropolis at Curtea de Argeş, where the tombs of his ancestors, kings Carol I,
Ferdinand and Carol II are also found.
Three
Seas. Romania’s interim minister for agriculture and rural development Adrian
Oros is attending a summit of agriculture ministers of the Three Seas countries
hosted by Cracow, in Poland. Talks are focusing on the impact of the Common
Agricultural Policy on the transformation of agriculture and rural areas in the Three Seas
region into a green and digital economy, ways to ensure supply of fodder
protein to the region and the challenges linked to the research and innovation
of food systems. The Three Seas Initiative is a forum of 12 EU member states
located between the Baltic, Adriatic and
Black Seas.
Tennis. Three Romanian players are an action today
on the main draw at the Transylvania Open, a WTA 250 tournament hosted by Cluj
Napoca and worth over 235,000 dollars in prize money. In the first round, Alexandra
Ignatikis facing Germany’s Anna-Lena
Friedsam, Andreea Prisăcariu is
playing Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, and Ana
Bogdan is playing Serbia’s
Ivana Jorovic. Also at this tournament, Simona Halep will face Gabriela
Ruse, while Irina Begu will play Irina Bara, in two all-Romanian matches. The
British-Romanian player Emma Răducanu is also taking part, facing Slovenia’s Polona
