Politics. Fresh talks to designate the country’s next prime minister will take place on Tuesday between president Nicușor Dan and the parliamentary parties. The president believes that a majority for a stable government will be found this time. He has ruled out the idea of a technocratic government, saying the future cabinet will likely consist of ministers proposed by political parties. According to political sources, the next prime minister is expected to be an independent figure leading a government with a Social Democratic majority, also supported in Parliament by the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. The leader of the Social Democratic Party Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday that the Social Democrats would go to the talks with their own nominee for prime minister, adding that he himself is ready to take on that role. Romania has not had a government with full powers since May 5, when the minority cabinet led by Liberal leader Ilie Bolojan and consisting of the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania was dismissed by Parliament through a vote of no-confidence.
Romanian Language Day. Romanian Language Day was celebrated on Monday in Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In a message posted online, Romanian president Nicuşor Dan emphasised that protecting the rights of Romanians everywhere and promoting national culture remain essential goals for Romania. He called the Romanian language “a valuable bond,” capable of anchoring us in history and opening the door to the future. The president extended his congratulations to all those who speak, write, and keep the Romanian language alive, regardless of borders. Established in 2013 by the Romanian Parliament, the Romanian Language Day coincides with the national holiday in the Republic of Moldova and pays tribute to the national revival movement in this neighbouring country, where the majority of the population is Romanian-speaking. On August 31, 1989, in the midst of Soviet rule, the Parliament in Chișinău, picketed by some 750,000 people, which was about one-sixth of the republic’s population at the time, decided to declare Romanian the official language and to switch to the Latin alphabet in place of the Cyrillic alphabet imposed by the occupiers following the 1940 annexation.
Budget deficit. Romania’s budget deficit dropped significantly in the first seven months of the year to some 9.1 billion euros. According to the finance ministry, this accounts for a 37% reduction compared to the same period last year. As a share of GDP, the deficit fell from 3.99% to 2.34%. This adjustment is attributed to an 11% rise in revenues, while budget expenditures were kept under control, going up by only 2.9%, without impacting investments. The government has implemented a series of measures starting August 1, 2025 aimed to achieve a sharp reduction in the budget deficit level, which had reached 9.3% of GDP in 2024, the highest level in the European Union.
Funding. The Romanian government met on Monday in an extraordinary session to adopt documents required for the conclusion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, a national investment and reform mechanism funded by a special EU fund established to support Europe’s recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. The official deadline for accessing the funds expired on Monday. Projects that are still ongoing will have to be finalised using local authority budgets rather than non-repayable European funds. Out of the over 20 billion euros it was allocated, Romania has only managed to cash in about 13 billion. Whether it gets the rest, it depends on the European Commission’s assessment of the reforms implemented by the authorities in the last minute. Prior to the conclusion of the programme, over 15,000 projects funded by EU money were underway, and approximately 4,500 of these have not yet been formally finalised.
Diplomacy. Bucharest is playing host to the annual meeting of the Romanian diplomatic service. Ambassadors, consuls and high-ranking officials are participating in the event led by acting foreign minister Oana Ţoiu. The cornerstones of Romania’s foreign policy, such as its membership of the European Union and NATO, the transatlantic partnership, and neighbourly relations, are vital to the country yet undergoing transformation, said the minister. She said one cannot talks about Romania’s foreign policy priorities without looking at security, particularly in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Senate speaker Mircea Abrudean also said Romania today must be an active provider of security within NATO, especially along the Eastern Flank and in the Black Sea region. He added that the presence of US troops on national territory represents the most solid security guarantee Romania has ever had in its modern history. The meeting of the diplomatic service focuses on how diplomatic and consular efforts can further strengthen the country’s international profile, promote its security and economic interests and support Romanian citizens.
Rowing. At the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, held between August 24–30, Romanian rowers won three gold medals, two of them on Sunday, on the final day of competition, in the women’s eight and the mixed eight. In a first for Romania, Adriana Adam and Simona Radiş finished the World Championships in Amsterdam with three gold medals, in the mixed eight, women’s eight, and the women’s pair on Friday. As a result, Romania ranked fourth in the medal ranking, with three gold medals, behind The Netherlands, Germany and the United States. (CM)
