Consultations – In Romania, the leaders of the parliamentary parties are waiting for President Nicuşor Dan to summon them once again for consultations on forming a new government, as the fall parliamentary session began on Tuesday without a clear majority. According to political analysts, the PNL and USR, both right-wing parties that, together with the UDMR, form the interim government in Bucharest, categorically refuse to be part of an executive alongside the PSD (left-wing), which was ousted from power a few months ago. The PSD has announced that it will make a decision after the prime minister-designate is named. For its part, the nationalist opposition, represented by the AUR, which is surging in the polls, is calling for early elections, which it considers the only way to overcome the current political deadlock.

Dublin — Romania’s Acting Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, is participating today in Wicklow, Ireland, in the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers. The agenda is dominated by the EU’s response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Meanwhile, yesterday, also in Wicklow, a similar meeting of defense ministers from EU member states concluded, at which Romania was represented by Acting Minister Radu Miruță. Both meetings were organized as Ireland holds the six-month presidency of the Council of the EU.

Tennis — The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea faces French player Diane Parry today in the second round of the U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. In the opening round, Cîrstea (36), the No. 16 seed at the New York tournament, defeated Austrian Julia Grabher 2-0 in sets, while another Romanian player, Gabriela Ruse, lost in two sets to American Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s third seed. In 2026, at the Grand Slam tournaments, Cîrstea reached the second round at the Australian Open, the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, and the third round at Wimbledon.

Diplomacy – “Diplomacy, the Anchor of a Changing World” was the theme of the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy, an event that brought to Bucharest the heads of Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices from around the world. In his speech, President Nicușor Dan noted that Romanian diplomacy has three objectives: strengthening security, supporting Romanian communities abroad, and economic diplomacy. For her part, Acting Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu noted that the agenda of the discussions focused on economic growth, security, and strengthening trust and relations with the Diaspora. The diplomats were also received by Liberal Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. He emphasized the important role played by the diplomatic teams, particularly those in Brussels, in relations with European institutions and within NATO for the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and SAFE programs. Ilie Bolojan also stated that economic diplomacy must be a key component of Romania’s foreign policy, but its effectiveness depends, among other things, on the competitiveness of the national economy.

According to a press release from the Authority, of the total number of Romanian voters registered in the Electoral Register, nearly 18 million have their domicile or residence in the country, while 1,051,973 have their domicile abroad, the Authority further specifies in the press release.
