At the end of this week we are going to see in Bucharest some of Europe’s best women’s handball sides

This weekend Bucharest will be seeing the final tournament of the continental competition Euro Cup 2026. The women’s handball sides of Norway, Denmark, Hungary and Romania are attending the competition and besides Romania, these are the teams that stepped onto the podium of the European Championship two years ago.
The Euro Cup 2026 competition was designed for the sides that did not need to participate in the preliminaries of the European Championship in winter, either thanks to their results in the previous edition, or because they are among the organizing countries.
At the beginning of the competition we had the representatives of Norway, Hungary, Denmark, Turkey, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Romania.
The teams were divided in two groups. The first, which included Norway, Romania, Poland and Slovakia, was topped by the first with 6 wins, followed by Romania, which secured 4 wins. Poland won two times and Slovakia lost all the matches. Things were also simple in the second group, which was topped by Denmark, with the highest number of points, followed by Hungary, with four wins, Czechia with two and Turkiye with no point.
The matches of the final tournament in Bucharest will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Norway versus Hungary will open the series. The latest major game opposing the two sides was the semis of the European championship, held in Vienna and won by Norway 30-22.
It would be interesting to watch the ‘duel’ between the Norwegian Henny Reistad, the world’s best player in 2023 and 2024 and Katrin Klujber, a legend of the Hungarian handball and the best scorer at EURO 2024.
Saturday’s second game will be pitching the Romanian side against Denmark, which is coached by Helle Thomsen, who also coached the Romanian champions CSM Bucharest. The Danish side has dominated the matches between the two sides in the past years. Romania hasn’t managed to win a game against the Danes since 2015, when the team led by Cristina Neagu clinched a dramatic away win 31-30 in the quarterfinals of the World Championship. Worth noting is the match for the bronze medal and the finals of the present EHF Euro Cup will be held on Sunday.
