RATING The international rating agency Standard & Poor’s is today announcing Romania’s rating, which is actually saying how safe the country is for foreign investors. This is going to be the third rating this year after those made by Fitch on July 31 and Moody’s on August 7. A good rating translates into lower interest rates, stability and lower pressure on the public budget. The decision comes in a period of major political deadlock: Romania has been without a government with full powers for almost five months now. The interim Finance Minister, Alexandru Nazare, has voiced optimism in terms of the country rating adding that he held extensive talks with financial experts. Nazare says that as compared to the deficit last year, the adjustment caused a reduction of 27 billion lei whereas investment has risen by 25 billion. We recall that Romania has the lowest investment rating BBB minus, while the three international agencies have maintained a negative outlook.
REPORT A US State Department report on Romania’s investment environment this year says the country is actively involved in the process of attracting direct foreign investment, while its strategic position, EU and NATO membership, the qualified labour force, competitive salaries and natural resources are making it attractive to companies from the the Middle East or the Caucasus, which are interested in getting access to European markets. The report says that the shift in the ruling coalitions’ priorities as well as the fiscal consolidation measures contribute to a less predictable business environment, whereas corruption remains a persistent challenge in spite of the significant progress obtained.
