RATING The decision of the rating agency, Standard & Poor’s (S&P), to maintain Romania’s rating confirms the fact that Romania is a reliable partner for investment and our country gives signs of stability, Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, writes on Facebook. This result is the merit of the entire society and the financial discipline policies. However, this is not a moment for relaxation. Keeping this direction depends on our responsibility of putting the economic stability and development in the first place, beyond political stakes, the Head of the Romanian state went on to say. In turn, the Interim Liberal Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, says that “the consistent results” and meeting the commitments has made it possible for the rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) to maintain Romania’s country rating. He says the government he heads has managed to reduce the deficit by 27 billion lei (approximately 5 billion EUROS) while simultaneously increasing investments. On Friday, S&P reaffirmed Romania’s sovereign rating at ‘BBB-‘ with a negative outlook, keeping the country within the investment-grade category. The agency highlights the very high level of public investment—supported to a significant extent by the European funds—as the primary driver of economic activity this year. On the other hand, it notes that the formation of a government backed by a majority and the adoption of a credible budgetary framework for 2027–2028 are essential for maintaining the fiscal consolidation trajectory. Furthermore, Standard & Poor’s emphasizes that the outlook could return to stable if Romania’s external and fiscal deficits were to narrow, thereby halting the deterioration of government and external balance sheets. S&P also says that it might consider a rating downgrade should external pressures intensify—for instance, if energy market disruptions were to compromise medium-term inflation expectations in Romania, while also significantly impacting economic growth, the balance of payments, and fiscal outcomes. The S&P assessment follows reports from Fitch in July and Moody’s in August; both agencies decided to maintain the ratings and the negative outlook assigned to Romania, while keeping it at an investment-grade level.

TALKS Romanian President Nicușor Dan has invited representatives of the political parties and groups in Parliament on Monday for talks on the nomination of a candidate for the Prime Minister seat, the Presidential Administration has announced. The talks are to begin with the PSD, AUR, and PNL, and conclude with unaffiliated lawmakers. Nicușor Dan asked the parties to come to the talks with viable solutions. He ruled out the inclusion of the AUR—the populist-nationalist opposition party—in a new government, explaining that doing so would harm relations with Romania’s partners. At the same time, he gave assurances that the country’s pro-Western course would be maintained and financial commitments honored. The President has already announced that he will nominate a new Prime Minister later on Monday, following the conclusion of the talks. The PSD is willing to discuss forming a full-mandate government; the PNL is awaiting the president’s nomination before making a decision; and the USR refuses to join a cabinet alongside PSD ministers, advocating instead for early elections—a solution also supported by AUR, which said it would not vote for any future government, regardless of the nominee. It is worth noting that on Wednesday, the Bucharest Parliament failed to grant a vote of confidence to the government proposed by Liberal politician Siegfried Mureșan. This marks the second time an executive has failed to secure the legislature’s approval, following the rejection of the government proposed by Liberal politician Adrian Veștea in June. It has been nearly five months since the PSD and AUR toppled the government led by Liberal Ilie Bolojan in May via a no-confidence motion.

SUMMIT The 11th edition of the RePatriot Summit continued on Saturday in the Black Sea resort of Mamaia (southeastern Romania). Moving beyond the traditional conference format, participants worked in teams within “RePatriot Labs”—sessions dedicated to concrete projects and challenges on the Black Sea. According to the organizers, this maritime experience complemented the workday by fostering closer connections, collaboration, and teamwork among participants—dynamics that carry over into subsequent working sessions and discussions regarding the projects being developed. On Friday, participants discussed Romania’s role on Europe’s front line of defense and the transformations occurring in the Black Sea region, focusing on security, energy, infrastructure, trade, and technology. The gathering began on October 1 in Bucharest under the High Patronage of the President of Romania. While attending the event in Bucharest, he urged fellow citizens in the Diaspora to “test” Romania, noting that despite its remaining shortcomings and dysfunctions, the country has made progress over the last two decades. At the same time, the head of state emphasized the need for a competitive and predictable economic environment in Romania. RePatriot brings together over 300 Romanian entrepreneurs, managers, and professionals from the Diaspora, selected based on their achievements, contributions, and impact in their respective countries of residence and work.

FZ1073 Prosecutors in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday confirmed that Wednesday’s incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv was a terrorist attack. The co-pilot attacked the pilot with a crash axe in an attempt to take control of the aircraft. Several crew members and passengers managed to get into the cockpit and subdue the attacker after the pilot had opened the door. 180 passengers were on board including 100 Israelis and two reserve pilots who eventually managed to stabilize the plane and land it safely in Saudi Arabia. The attacker, an Omani national, had been working for the aforementioned company for 9 months. He was fired last year from Oman’s national air company due to his radical views. The pilot and co-pilot were taken to hospital and are reported to be in a stable condition. A crash axe is usually kept in the cockpit in case of emergency.

FOOTBALL Romania’s football side came a cropper against Poland on the National Stadium in Warsaw on Friday night, 6-0 in a match counting towards Group B4 of the Nations League. Romania thus suffered one of the heaviest defeats in its history in a game it played mostly with 10 footballers in the pitch after Radu Dragusin had been given an early bath in the 22nd minute. Romania has lost all the games it played so far in the group, 1-2 against Sweden, 2-4 against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Sweden ranks first in the group with 7 points, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina with 6, Poland with 4 and the laggard Romania with no points. Romania will be playing Sweden on October 5, again Poland on November 14 and Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 17.
