Cabinet hearings – Hearings for the ministers proposed for the Luca Niculescu cabinet have begun within the specialized committees of the Romanian Parliament. The hearings will continue on Tuesday, the day scheduled for the investiture vote. Political calculations have shifted in favor of the new government team, following an agreement signed on Sunday between PNL leader Ilie Bolojan and the Prime Minister-designate, providing for conditional support over the coming months. The document commits the future executive to reducing the budget deficit to a maximum of 5.3% of the Gross Domestic Product by 2027. The Niculescu government, in which two-thirds of the portfolios are held by the PSD, is expected to secure the support of the PNL, the UDMR, and the national minorities group, in addition to the votes of the Social Democrats. The USR and AUR have announced that they will not vote for the Niculescu cabinet. To be invested, the government needs the votes of at least 233 members of Parliament. The governing program prioritizes the budget revision, the adoption of the state budget law for the coming year, and support measures for disadvantaged individuals. It also includes provisions for the indexation of pensions in 2027, though no specific percentage is mentioned, as well as the adoption of a new law on public-sector wages.
Deficit – The budget deficit fell to 3.82% of the Gross Domestic Product after the first nine months of the year, according to data from the Finance Ministry. Violence – The French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on Sunday evening, one day after the most violent protests seen in recent years. These events have caused chaos in major cities, resulted in extensive damage, raised questions regarding the conduct of law enforcement, and fueled political tensions ahead of the upcoming election year, news agencies report. The President made a distinction between hooligans and thieves on one hand, and demonstrators who took to the streets to voice legitimate grievances on the other. He assured the latter group that they would be heard by the authorities, noting that the government would begin consultations, starting as early as today, with trade unions and other dissatisfied representatives. Furthermore, Emmanuel Macron pledged to provide assistance to business owners whose shops had been broken into and looted. He also pointed to the involvement of far-left groups that incited chaos and destruction. ‘We are six months away from the presidential election; France is a major democratic power and deserves a proper debate, one that should take place in public forums involving all political parties, rather than through violence in the streets’, Macron stated. Last week, various grievances also triggered a series of protests in other European countries. In Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Greece, and Albania, people took to the streets to express discontent over the general economic situation, rising fuel prices, and government corruption. In several cities across northern Italy, clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement.

The main road to Ibiza airport is closed, at least five flights have been canceled and others diverted.
